We've just had a long weekend here - still are in fact, but we had Friday off as well.

The Queens Birthday apparently ?

So we booked a hotel and went to Port Stephens - 2 1/2 hrs north of Sydney.

White sands and clear blue water - it just so happens that this weekend the drought broke :(
Good for the farmers - luckily we were in the jeep :)

So we went to nearby Stockton beach - about 30kms long and a mile wide.
Gave the 4wd a good test - nearly tipped it over in the sand dunes - cos we got lost !
used $40 of fuel in 2 hours !!
Poor car - it was hard work.

The local ATV dune bashing tours looked fun

There is a shipwreck at the lower end of the beach.

Walked up the nearby hill - 1km at 45 degrees - hard work but worth it - pity it wasn't clear blue sky :(

went on a Dolphine watching cruise - theres about 100 live in the bay - they like 'surfing' on the boats bow wave - it creates a pressure wave underwater.

Also - its whale migration season at the moment - blue whales travel up the east cost of Aus to warmer waters - lots of boat trips but you have to be very lucky.
We stayed on shore - but didn't see any

On the way back we took an off road track straight across the Watagan mountains and then down to the pub at St. Albans.
Luckily we had the Garmin or we'd have been even more lost - no decent map with us.
Did about 150 kms of dirt road - loads of bikes in the woods in the mountains.

I'll be heading there on the GS fairly soon :thumb
