I have just bought a GS700 to replace my GS1200. Initial feelings are good decision. I want to prepare it for a solo trip across the Amercias. One of the many mods I want to do is the seat. I have read a lot of stuff and it seems that the Sergeant seat gets the thumbs up. So before I go ahead and order one had anyone got one and what do they think. Or has anyone any anti views.:rob
thanks for your comments

I hummed and harred on my 650, finally plonked for the BMW comfort on cost and narrow front (like you I had a 12, had tried a Corbin on that but a little too broad). Leg position/ posture so important to get right for you - I am a big fan of the Fastway pegs to improve angles etc, also replacing handlebars to suit me.

HI Bem
Thanks for your reply appreciated. I have looked at the BMW but maybe leaning towards the Sargeant. How much did your BM comfort seat cost you? My other improvements so far are the Metal Mule balanced pannier rack along with the Scorpion Exhaust (narrow and lighter). I am almost definitely going to go for the Adventure Spec sump guard and engine bars. Also considering the Vision x optimus lighting and bark buster hand guards. Its all so bloody expensive but I think you get what you pay for most of the time and the parts that are on my short list have all had lots of good things said about them on other sites.
Oh yes I also want to check out a suitable replacement windshield.

Hi Gordy

Good luck with your plans for an America's trip.

I have completed over 7000miles on my F700 this year and found it to be a great bike and extremally economical and will do your trip. You may have seen some posts of mine regarding my veiws on the F700.

However I have recentley sold the bike and now got a 1200rt as I do more touring and spend a lot of time riding up and down the country and I found the 1200 compared to the 700 a better bike for touring.........If i could have two the f700 would be one of them.

I have a Sargent Enduro seat that I used for the 7000 miles and is in great condidtion (I prefered to enduro seat to the classic sport seat as it allows you to move about more) and i am happy to let you have a try on it if you want, I see you dont live far from me, Im north of cambridge

If your up for it drop me a email and we'll talk / meet up

Take care Bigboy

HI BB
Thanks for the offer. I am at Snetterton Friday and away over the weekend. So maybe sometime next week? I have sent you a pm with my email so we can arrange meeting more easily.
Cheers

From my research the Sergeant is slightly more comfortable than the BMW Comfort.

Every time BMW launch new bikes I'm thinking , "just make one with a bloody seat we can use ". This whole seat issue has spoilt the F800GS experience for me and the BMW comfort seat , although a significant improvement on the standard one, isn't really comfortable at all.

I use an Airhawk on my F700 - a big improvement over the dreadful BMW standard seat.
What would be nice on the bike, apart from a seat you could sit on for any length of time, would be a cubby-hole for a reasonable tool kit etc. Even my old airhead R100RS had space for a first aid kit, tool tray, and a place behind the seat for a few bits. Bugger all space on the 700!

HI Roger
Yes I agree ref space. With the airhawk I am concerned that it could be nicked when I am in the back and beyond whereas a seat is not of much interest to the casual petty thief. I was going to have a look at the number plate thingy that has a storage space concealed behind it. I saw it in an adventure shop somewhere but didn't look too closely at the time. This may be of use for a small first aid kit.

Hi Gordy,
yes, the Airhawk is a bit exposed for potential theft, but you can always unclip the straps, and lock in a topbox etc. And you can use it on other bikes too, if required.
I'm planning on putting a Pelicase on the bike for a topbox, but still thinking of best way of attaching to my Rugged Roads rear rack.
One question though - how big is the storage space built into the Sargent seat - looks like you could get a few bits in there, plus a First Aid kit perhaps ? Why don't BMW do a similar thing I wonder - seats to skinny maybe ?

Hi Roger
Just had a nightmare afternoon trying to fit my new Metal Mule rack to the bike. Look good though once fitted. The exhaust that I also bought from MM is a lot smaller and lighter (about 6lb lighter). The racks also will provide good protection for the rear when not carrying panniers too so I am well pleased with my choice of pannier system.

The sergeant seat blurb mentions room for stowage so when I get mine I will let you know.

I have a Sargent and the storage is very small first aid kit might just fit I have tried both the standard and BMW comfort and settled on the Sargent its good for about 120 miles at a time for me.

We are all different and what works for one might not work for another the other 2 seats I could do about 40 miles and 70 miles without a stop. The Sargent is similar to the BMW comfort but allows a bit more room in the bowl so you can move about and change position the seat softness or position is no better than the BMW comfort if you stay in the same position all the time been able to move is the only advantage.

I think riding a lot is the key to seat comfort been bike fit more than the type of seat if you ride everyday after a while what ever seat you decide on will just get better with time.
