Help -- I have a garmin Zumo powered from the headstock supply (the BMW one that's part of the CanBus) after around 2 years of problem free operation, for some strange reason the Canbus has started turning off the power to the Satnav when I start the engine. It's ok with the ignition on but a few seconds after starting it turns off the supply and the satnav goes onto internal battery, what's changed all of a sudden ---- any ideas ???

I thought the accessory sockets were load shed on start up.

Had the bike serviced recently? Does the other sockets also go off?

Maybe now the zumo sees a longer "off" of the bikes power so goes onto its internal battery, might be the starter pulling more power out of the battery / the battery not recovering as quickly.

not sure about the other sockets, bike not long serviced and kept on Optimate 4 all the time ---- everything was OK last week when I went out, I'm baffled

I have the same setup and the same problem, occasionally when starting the bike, I get the 'continue on external power' message.
My mechanic mate checked the battery and although it's OK, it's a little tired, it's the original March 07 battery on a 24K bike.
The assumption is that cranking the 'dumper truck' engine as it's known (he rides a Buel Firebolt aka the tractor) takes a lot of current and when cranking, the voltage passed to the accessory socket drops enough to trigger this message on the sat nav.
As soon as the engine fires, the message dissapears.
So it could be that although your optimate keeps the battery charged, it's getting tired.

I've got a similar issue mate:

No idea what's causing it, but my "workaround" is simply to have the SatNav turned off, turn on the ignition and start the bike without going through the startup checks. The unit recognises the external power and turns on automatically. It would seem, therefore, there's no real issue with power from the Canbus and the fault lies within the SatNav itself. :nenau

OK thanks -- i'll try that. I guess there's no issue ignoring the start up checks on the bike then.

Not as far as I know - other than you don't have the "peace of mind" that the checks give you. I like to live dangerously anyway... :D

Ummm, why not leave the satnav out of the cradle, start the bike, letting it do it's checks, then put the satnav into place and see if that works? Diagnostics done and (hopefully) a working power supply to the satnav....

wire a small capacitor in parallel with the power supply and sorted. :thumb

I would suggest that since canbus conserves energy to power only essential components, have a look at your battery. It may look ok crank ok but since the weather is changing now it only going to get worse.

It's not canbus technology, the R100GS PD also had a load shed relay

"wire a small capacitor in parallel", "load shed relay" - if only I knew what it all meant :(

:D

I have a 2610 wired the same way as yourself.Recently I had a new battery fitted due to brake failure probs, however on this current trip around the Lakes I have noticed that my Sat Nav no longer shuts down when restarting the bike from the ignition ON position. So check yer battery.

same here

had my Zumo fitted by BMW agents. Same thing happend after about three days so I took it back. They said it was a software problem and there was a standard upgrade to cure it. No trouble since then.

But, I don't like the Zumo. It tells me when I will reach the destination - a time which is usually wildy inaccurate - but no the most important thing whichis how far do I have to go. When you set the destination, there is no indication of whether it is 5 miles or 500. Also, it tells you how far to the nesxt turn, but not which way it will be.

I have a TomTom in the car, the map is better, the instructions are clear, the safety camera warnings are not so vague and the information dispalyed is more useful

I had a similar problem, which I could not resolve, BMW did agree they had heard of the problem before, but offered no help, so taking advice from others on this site, I wired it straight to the battery with an inline fuse.
