I have posted this (in part) as a warning as well as a timely reminder for anyone thinking of buying a cheapo £££ gps system from an auction site or from a dubious source or a man in the pub.

The subject of ebay purchases has been mentioned before and that most gps units are registered with the manufacturer and can be traced when someone unwittingly attempts to register the unit or if its has been flagged as stolen (serial or s/ware licence numbers).

It's reported today that drivers were being urged to be vigilant after an increase in the number of sat nav systems being stolen from cars in London.

Up to 500 gadgets are being stolen (from cars or bikes) in London every month, according to police.

These sat nav systems, costing you up to £500, are being sold on for about £60 :spitfire.

Some 100 officers from the Met and Essex police took part in Operation Smother on Wednesday. They raided 19 properties in Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Brentwood and Loughton in Essex. A total of 15 cars and about 15 motor-bikes were recovered along with other property including six sat nav systems, car stereos, motorcycle parts and computer parts.
