Hi,

Using the supplied lead from Nippy Normans, I wired my tomtom rider 400 to the auxillary plug up by the headstock. Which I had read was for Satnavs.

If I turn the ignition on the sat nav charges BUT as soon as I press the starter the power must drop as my satnav says power has been disconnected.

Any idea's why ?

I have the same sat nav and mine does the same I think power is interrupted whilst starting, once started it should come straight back to life.

There is 3 wires you using the right pair?
Failing that could be a weak battery, voltage is dropping when cranking.
Check with volt meter.

Because power has been disconnected. The lead is for the BMW garmin setup which ignores the power being out for a few seconds. Infact my none bmw garmin ignores it as well. Maybe there is a setting in the Tom Tom that can do the same?

Thanks for the replies,

The power doesn't come back on, it is like it is dead once started. The only time it will charge is with ignition turned on but not started.

I think i'm going to take power from elsewhere

It sounds like it's a satnav specific issue.
The bike has a load shedding relay which disconnects unnecessary auxiliaries during starting so that the starter / ECU / ignition etc gets as much power as possible.

Garmin satnav a just power themselves back on when power is restored - could be that TomTom's don't do this (or that there is a setting that will enable it?)

Power to my Garmin Montana sometimes drops when cranking the starter. As it's only sometimes I reckon it's a symptom of a problem causing low voltage in the system ( in fact I know this to be the case coz the GS911 shows a fault of low system voltage). So one or more of: battery, poor battery/starter/earth connections, or a starter motor needing cleaning or servicing. I am not concerned by it and will get round to looking at it if becomes more frequent or problematic.

Very strange this. I managed to test the tomtom mounting today and that shows 5.5volts even after the bike has started. I didn't have the sat nav with me at the time so i'm going to do more tests later.

This tells me though that there is infact power to that mounting after the bike has started, for some reason the satnav is not picking it up.

Occasionally have this as well with my past and present Garmin.
Does not happen every time, something to do with drawing power from the socket and needing power to start the bike at the same time.
Socket shuts down and does not power back up untill I turn off the ignition and let the system reset.
I now start the bike up first and then fit the GPS into its cradle.

I use a TT rider wired using the same connector. Mine stays on when cranking. I would just check that you have used the correct two wires from the three. The earth is straightforward as you can do a continuity check to the battery. That leaves two positives. One I believe is a signal or trigger feed for something and the other is 12v feed. I would check that you have got the 'right' 12v feed and you're polarity is correct. The wires are numbered and my hazy memory says 1&3 are used but that is a dangerous assumption without checking.
+1 for checking the settings to do with the interruption of power.:thumb2

The canbus drops out while starter is turning. If sat nav internal battery is flat the unit will switch off.

Sent via iPhone so expect strange words

Battery on sat nav was fine. I've still not worked it out. Tonight when I started the bike then put the satnav in it charged ok. I travelled about 30 miles then left the bike for 2 hours.

I came back and it wouldn't work. When I test the holder it is 5.5v as soon as I connect the satnav it charged for a split second and then goes onto battery power.

It is as if the bike is detecting it and turning it off. Really strange.

I might just connect the bloody thing to the battery

Sorted now, thanks everybody who helped. I have wired it direct to the battery as I would never leave it on the bike anyway.
