I always have trouble trying to make a route on the pc .The one bit I cannot get the hang of is saving my waypoints in appropriate categories ie. hotels in France or even my home point .
With the map source on screen if I click on the waypoint on the left the categories turns blue open up the desired category I have re named & nothing I dont seem to be able to save a way point in here .
If for instance I make one on the map with the flag & i wish to close map source it always ask if i want to save so i have made & named a folder for the waypoint but again nothing .I can make & save a route but would find it easier if as on the unit if I could just find the saved way points .
Thanks in anticpation Ian

The waypoint categories are simply a filter within a file of one or more waypoints.

If you create or upload a couple of hundred various waypoints you can save them to a file called ianswapoints.gdb. If you re-open that file, they will all be there. However, you can then categorise the waypoints into groups eg:
  1. Pubs
  2. Campsites
  3. BMW dealers
  4. Hotels
  5. etc
    [/list=1]

and then resave your file. This time when you reopen, you'll only see all of your waypoints if you select 'All categories'. If you only want to see hotels, you just select that category.

    Does that help?

Just read your post to Ian. Thanks I was also struggling with that.

Greg are you saying your way points aren't actually saved on your mapsource but it goes to one of the made up folders on your hard drive.
I am still missing something here I thought when you opened the categories you would find saved way points after all its dead easy to save & find on the unit & much easier to make up your route if you can just go to saved waypoints which is what I am trying to do on the map source just dont seem to be able to save them .

Ps am using the 2610 dont know if that makes any difference

I suspect you're confusing waypoints with POI's (points of interest).

AS Greg says, waypoints are saved in a seperate file that Mapsource can open, but you can't add them INTO mapsource as additional information, like POI's are.

It's a shame, because if you could, you could then download and convert the speed camera database and show those on the screen as POI's.

When you save anything in Mapsource be it a collection of waypoints with categories assigned to them or just waypoints your saving it as a file, which you give a name. That file could contain routes as well.

It's like saving a letter you've written in Word. When you open that file again you get all the text you saved.

Mapsource is like MS Word; it’s the programme that launches to open the file you saved.

Folders are what you keep these files in.

Here is a folder I've called "Italy 2005" in it are various files each one with its own waypoints and routes.

MapSource is a program, just like MS Word is a program. The MapSource program uses datafiles - the mapping data - just like MS Word uses datafiles - the spellcheck/thesaurus library.

But what you create - the route, the waypoints, the letters and documents - you have to save and retrieve yourself.
