What's the most straightforward free way to do this ?

there's a firefox add on that does it quite wel and it's free. have a hunt round under the tools menu for add-ons.

Most reliable way I have found is to use CacheViewer add-on for firefox. Watch the movie then jump into CacheViewer and sort by size or fetch date and once you find the cached file just save it as a flv. This works even for the ones you usually can't get by the other downloaders. There will still be the odd one you can't save though. Also works if you want to save flash games to play later.
