Looking for advice - my elderly father-in-law celebrates his diamond wedding next weekend.

He loves sitting listening to the aircraft from RAF Waddington and the control tower.

He has a Realistic Pro-43 scanner which no longer works - any advice on which new scanner I can get him for a present. Not concerned about price really (no more than £200 if possible).

I went in to maplins to ask them but they were next to useless and I read that their scanners aren't that powerful anyway.

Scanner on its own is a bit boring. Get him a transceiver so that he can have a natter with the pilot.

Try contacting your local radio hams group, they will have good advice.

There's a very unused Yupiteru MVT-7100 sitting here that I should've moved on years ago. Check em out they were a top, top scanner when I bought it. Doubt that's changed much :nenau

Oooooh! I couldn't afford a scanning transceiver when I got my ticket, so I had one of those sitting on the bench. Was damn near as good as my 767 over 20m

If he has a computer he can listen all over the world, the only country not covered is the UK... Live ATC or he can see the radar movements of all aircraft covering most of the world, see all the aircraft info....Flight Radar

I have it on quite a lot...yes I know....:D

PS. There's an App for the iPhone and Android for LiveATC

Be wary of a scanner which claims to cover everything from DC to X-rays. They're always a serious compromise. Look out for a dedicated airband receiver. I use a Signal R-535 which is superb.
