Just been updating my quest to the latest drivers etc etc and I'm still as dissapointed with their software as when I first got my SPIII.

Then, the installation prog was pants......it came up with multiple boxes and prompts for the next disc, wasn't intuitive and generally was a really clunky thing to install.

Tonight, I downloaded Quest v3.00, read the instructions and went ahead....all of a sudden, the updater shot across to 1oo% within a second or so and I knew it wouldn't have had time to upload the new OS to the Quest....and the USB light on my hub went out, as well as the unit turning itself off.
I tried to power it on, but all I got was 'System software missing' on the quest screen....fekk pig!!!!

So I had no software laoded on the Quest (apparently) and the USB wasn't recognising the unit......ARSE!!!

A quick reboot didn't solve things, but changing USB sockets brought up a request for the drivers again, and then the updater laoded correctly and the Quest is now working agin and has all the original info (including a personalised splash screen, indicating that the 'system software' hadn't been deleted at all)

Garmin are superb on customer service as has been reported by many here, but their software needs some polishing!!!

And I need a new pair of pants.......I really thought I'd screwed it there for a minute or three!

PS I am running all the latest USB 2.00 drivers under xp- everything's up to date there, so I'm confident it's a garmin problem not my PC playing up.

That’s very scary! You did well to sort it out without throwing a wobbly
I’ve updated the bios on the 276c twice now, both went quick and easy on USB

Garmin Updates

Well I now know how tricky Garmin updates are, spent the last 2 weeks trying to sort out Mapsource 6.5 and City Nav V6 upgrades.
Just got mapsource working and now can't connect to the GPS, SPIII. Keep getting 'Blue Screen' WINDOWS, A fatal exception OD has occurred @0028:EC3D2592 in VXD BTPORT(01) + 00003E02 blah, blah. This happens even without any cables fitted, sounds more like a windows prob, I have just re-installed WIN98SE and about to unistall Mapsource and try again, is this the best thing to do?
Cheers TBM

Nope.

Best thing to do is install XP , then SP1 and SP2 before any other software.......

Win98, even with all the patches, will never be very good with USB and in particular anything that's expecting USB2....though it is better than Win2000 or some other OS's.

Do you have to carry on with 98 for hardware reasons?

Thanks for the reply Fanum.

Old PC, well workstation, PII 800 but SCSI bits. Use it for CAD work mostly, runs fine and is actually quicker than my P4 2.3 at work.

Have reinstalled and it works fine as long as I dont use the 6.5 upgrade, so I'll stick with the Mapsource V6 for now.

Cheers, anyway.

Quick Observation here.

Some USB devices NEED to be installed on the root hub to fully function. This means not using a USB HUB but connecting it directly to the PC.

I suspect that the issue was that you may have been using a Hub rather than direct connection to the PC.

The update to ver 3 on my Quest was straight forward and simple, sorry to hear you had problems.
The update from V6 to V7 map software was also simple but seemed to take an age.
BTW, is it wise and can you delete the V6 mapping software?
