OK guys I have just got an 07 1200gs after deliberating for ages and saving up my pennies/. Im pretty underwhelmed to be honest as I bought this bike to go touring and the seat and screen are much worse than my lowly little vstrom that I traded in. I am really surprised that this bike has such a great reputation for touring when you get battered about at any speed over 70.mph and the seat kills after a couple of hours. So now I have to find decent replacements for both. What's out there that doesnt cost another arm and leg?

thanks

John

You cannot be serious

Eveni f you really are fat and bulbous you will find an enormous amount of informaton on both seats and screens on this forum; just type the words into the bit markes 'search'....and come back next week - a little wiser perhaps..
You will find quite a numlber of satisfied riders here and a few disillusioned - but most are ready to give encouragement and advice.

Hi John,

I moved from a Strom to my GS and I feel the seat is much better, so I guess it is a personal preferance.

As for screen, I had a Givi on my Strom and it was excellent and I have one on the GS too. Makes a big difference to the blast and turbulence but certainly not perfect. If I wanted perfect set-up for touring I would get a tourer like an RT. Other good value options that may work for you include the Nippy Norman high and wide or the MRA Vario.

The full-on GSA screen is meant to be very good, but mighty expensive option.

I hope you get the set-up sorted and enjoy the beastie.

Matt

For the screen - Adventure winglets and Givi Screen are reputedly the best combination. I used the winglets and a Laminar Lip on my previous two bikes, to good effect.

For the seat - the cheap option is to get the OE seat(s) re-upholstered by one of the companies which specialises in doing motorcycle seats. Arguably, the better option is a Corbin or, especially, a Sargent.

I`ve just done 4200 miles over 2 weeks and I used an Airhawk and it was worth every single penny. No good if you find that your expensive re done seat is still uncomfy.

I am impressed by the speed of your replies on this forum. Thanks to everyone.
PS the lights and fuel guage are also crap!

thanks again guys. The airhawk seat looks like a good option and I have just ordered one. Screens look mighty expensive though

Good stuff, the airhawk feels a bit weird at first but you soon get used to it.

I`ll tell you that £159 is dirt cheap if the seat you`re sitting on is spoiling your 4000 mile 3 week holiday and anyway if they were good enough for Charley & Ewan :D
I`ve just done 4200 miles on mine & I`d gladly recommend them to anyone :thumb2

Motorworks, see link up there^,did me an MRA Vario screen,£96 delivered next day. It's fab.
As for the seat,no problem one up but I did an eight hour day with 'er indoors on the pillion last Sat. my balls were ready to bale out, dude. Looks like Wunderlich or Touratech.
For a seat that is.........do they do balls?

best screen: the adventure (haven't tried Givi), don't try the tall Nippy Normans options as they are not as good (though better than standard)

Seat: cheapest good solution for more than 2 hrs is an Airhawk pillow: best bike item I have ever bought actually.... AND yu can use it for your next bike..

Best screen

i think that you get what you pây for; The big advantage of the GSA screen is the extra support which makes the whole setup very rigid; it is also the IDEAL place to fix a GPS. yes, it is expensive but it is a genuine BMW part and it looks right on the bike; (and I know that I have written that before!)

Try no screen at all, then buy a std screen and cut it down to just cover the clocks - sorted my turbulance problem:thumb

Nobody's mentioned height!

I'm 6' tall and have a GSA with winglets and I'm not as convinced as others here that it's that good. Better then the ordinary GS - granted. But not that good. :rob

Had a Wunderlich screen on my old GS and that was quite good. If you're tempted by the GSA screen solution, try riding one at your local dealer first. Better still - do it anyway:augie
