Hope somebody might be able to help me please. I deleted a program this morning on my pc called ATI which I didn't think actually had any purpose to the workings of the pc. All it said was it was some type of shortcut program. It didn't warn me of any sharing of componants etc. as it occasionally does. Maybe it has nothing to do with this program, though it does seem a bit strange happining on the same day.
After about ten minutes without touching the pc, the screen keeps feezing & I have to either re-boot or just switch off & on again!!!!:(
Hope somebody can please help.
Cheers John

From my ultra low knowldge, I think that ATI has something to do with the screen. Are you running XP? If so you can reset the computer to an earlier time, found under Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. If not sorry mate.

I'd hazard a guess that ATI is the driver software for the graphics (video) card... oops.

Numerous options.

1. Remove the graphics card from device manager, reboot PC and let it find the drivers automaticaly. Removal of software doesn't necessarily mean removal of drivers.

2. If you have the CD or disk just reinstall the relevant support software.

3. If you don't have the CD or disk download the relevant software/drivers off the net. Tricky if it locks up every 10mins or so. This is where you need a second PC or a friend with one to download it for you.

ATI make graphics cards so the proprietary program that controls the display is not running leaving Windows to try to control it itself.

If you only deleted a shortcut (from the start menu/startup folder for example) rather than the actual program then the program is still on your hard disk

Have a look in your recycle bin for the shortcut - if it is there then restore it then reboot your PC

if you only deleted the shortcut it would not affect the running of the pc, although it's hard to see how you could have inadvertantly deleted the graphics driver or part of unless you were routing about in the windows or program files folders. where was this "shortcut"?

i would download the latest drivers from ATI.
uninstall remaining ATI video drivers from add/remove programs in the control panel.
install new driver.

all this assumes you actually do have an ATI graphics card of course. if in any doubt about exactly what card you have, download aida32 personal. install & run for complete system info.

BTW shortcuts have little arrows on the icon. the programs they refer to do not. unless you've turned them off with tweakUI or similar.

Thanks for the replies everyone, it's a bit of a long story, but to cut it short, yes I did remove the whole programme from Add/Remove programs! Was looking to speed up pc by taking unnecessary programs off:o Show's that I'm a computer numpty:doh
Still not everone can drive a 44 tonne truck:)

P.S. Went onto ATI's site for download, seems ok now thanks!

restart the computer in safe mode COld boot while holding F8 key.

Then try and reinstall the pilot (driver) through the control panel. ATI is your graphics system. Sagfe mode should start the PC with the minimal requirements. Good Luck
