Just got an 1150GS but getting fed up with turbulance from the screen at speed. Tried all settings/seat heights.
Any suggestions as to where I can get a slightly taller version?

The Givi screen is very efective. I heard the one that comes with the adventure protects even more, but it´s very expensive - around Eur 300. the one from Givi costs only Eur 75

There is tonnes of stuff in this BBs archive about screens. You could go straigh to a BMW dealer (eg SPC) for the taller Wunderlich screens or to Skidmarx for one of their taller screens or even to Cee Baileys in the USA for one of their excellent screens. Many do.

Alternatively, many on this BB rate the MRA Vario screens.

The choice is significant. However, welcome to the R1150GS main downfall - its screen !!

MRA SCREEN

Try one of these -It's a MRA Screen from Germany. Available from SPC and Wunderlich and some other UK Importers.
Fully adjustable for height/tilt and has a 'V' in it to cut out turbulence. I'm 6'2 and find it great . No difference to wind noise -wear ear-plugs.But zero turbulence.

or there's the Malky Barn Door fairing,or I posted a piccie earlier of Colt's bike sporting another shed from Calamander - no idea what they'll do for turbulence - Malky will know about his, Colt wont as his bike was just modelling it at the NEC.

Dave, just borrowed an MRA and rode 4300 miles in 7 days...very good but upto 80mph not as good as no screen.

Don't nowhat kind of riding you do...but do try taking it of you'll be suprised.

hi rode my bike around nec carpark with the barn door on!
got it after modelling it .i haven't had time to use bike myself
,but a mate had to ride the bike home.
due to my work commitments
.It does not look so big when you're sat on the bike.still not sure if i will leave it on all the time.

For those of us with an 1100, what is the common wisdom regarding screens for these?

OK still screens !!

got adventure, think I can fit an MRA or wunderlich with the standard GS screen mounts (ordered).

But which one MRA varioscreen or Wunderlich ?????

good advice keenly awaited as the card is itchin.

Den

If you wanna try mine with the Wunderlich high screen before you buy, you're welcome. I seem to be too small for it and still get a bit of turbulence. Wouldn't mind trying an MRA Vario, though, if anyone has one locally to the Midlands.

I'll take you up on that Rooster, gotta see (hear) the can aswell, give you a shout near the weekend.

Screens & turbulence

David,
Alternatively, you could try cutting the lip at the top of the screen off (and then smoothing / polishing the cut edge) - works a treat for me - no more buffetting at any speed.

Also do try it without a screen - clean air but less protection.

How tall are you? I've heard that this works from Panzer Patrol, but he's slightly taller than me. Looking for a solution for a littl'un!

I'm 5.10 - I also have the screen set on its most raked back position, having found that works best for me.

OK, I'm no expert but at 6' the Givi does it for me...reasonable price too. Interestingly with my full face helmet I get some turbulance but with an open face... none! So maybe it's more than just the screen!!!

Helmets definitely have a great bearing on turbulence.
I have a Dainese Ergon (old shape) which is a bit like a F1 Car helmet ie wide deep chin piece , with a smaller visor aperture.
It is very light for a full face and coupled with an MRA screen, causes minimal to zero turbulence on the GS1150.The helmet design is paramount and I like the Dainese Ergon for it's quality and design.Sadly it's no longer available.
My Shoei XR8 is a poor second in the turbulence stakes, compared to the Dainese.
Here's a pic of my bike with MRA screen.

Cee Baileys plus 2" height and width

Just fitted one of these, turbulence is history but wind noise is here to stay! Screen directs the air flow straight at my head so it may be time to ditch the Arai Tour X as the peak now acts as a neck stretcher. One problem solved and another arises! Ho hum.

Windscreen FAQ

There's a well put together FAQ on Windscreens available on www.advrider.com -- I believe it's in the G Spot forum...If not, do a search on Windshield FAQ and it'll come up...It details all of the available screens and their relative +'s and -'s...Hope that helps...

The proverbial...

Ok, guys, how's this?

I stand up on the pegs of my Adventure in the fast lane and I get cleeeean air... no turbulence and relatively little noise. I sit down and there is slight buffeting and a LOT of noise..

So, as an experiment, I remove the screen in a lay-by (wishing I'd brought a cargo net or at the very least a ball of string) and stuff it up my jacket.

Back above 50 and my System 4's as noisy as ever (even with cheap ear-plugs). After conducting various shielding experiments with my left hand, I discover that most of the noise is coming up thru the bottom of my helmet just behind my left ear. If I try and seal off that area with my gloved hand, the noise drops off drastically.

I also find that flipping the lid open has an effect of drastically reducing the wind noise. I'm not sure what conclusion to draw apart the fact that I hope my future custom earplugs do thier job propery.

So what conclusions can I draw...?

1) System 4's are very noisy?
2) That wind noise and turbulence are effectively unrelated?
3) That turbulence on the GS is emminating from sources other just the windscreen?
4) Stick to less than 50 with my helmet open...?
5) Buy some custom earplugs?
6 Stand up all the time?

You decide...
