SD card format

Oh, come on guys. Which format is it for the sd card in a zumo, Fat or Fat32 ?

I know it was Fat on the CF card in my 2610.

Doing a quick search on Google at least one page mentioned that someone got an 8GB SD card working in a Zumo - if this is true that it must have been FAT32 as FAT only supports just over 2GB.

I can't however find anywhere that confirms this and it is also entirely possible that it could read either format - just not NTFS

Just put the 1GB card from my camera into my Zumo after I checked checked the format in my computer - it reported as FAT and I could open the camera photos on the Zumo

If my earlier post is correct regarding someone on the internet claiming that 8GB cards do work then points even more at can read FAT and FAT32

Have a look at Waldins sticky above .... "Things I know about Zumo" He reckons FAT32. Good enough for me

FAT32 works for me.

When formatted as FAT, it would only let me half fill the SD card - got the message "the drive will not support the file directory" when I tried to transfer any more MP3s to it.

Re-formatted as FAT32 and can actually get 2GB on it.

I'm no computer expert, though, so it might have been something else.

It's 32 Mb Not so much a memory card, more like a sort of, er........ummm.................er...........what was I saying? type card.

Switch on your Zumo and connect it to the computer. Click on the 'Start' button and go to 'My computer' and right-click on Removable Disk (H). Then click on 'Format' from the drop down menu. My only option is 'FAT'

As far as I know FAT32 is the same as FAT. Which is why you haven't got another option in your pc when it comes to formatting. The 2 GB limitation I think has been a while back but it is still better to use NTFS for larger harddrives. That said SD or the majority of memory cards usually are FAT32 formatted or should be. Not sure how this is handled with larger eventually available cards or solid state harddrives (ie 16, 32, 64 GB).

But then again I might be talking out of my a**

I have 4gig card in my Zumo, i just put the card in the reader/pc tx'ed the
music to it and a few routes and it works OK. All 4gig if it.

My original reply was FAT and that was based on my experience with my old Garmin 2610. It would only accept cards formatted as FAT, not FAT 32. I assumed, (rightly or wrongly), that the ZUMO would be the same. I haven't actually tried it with my ZUMO, but I apologise if I gave incorrect information.

To be accurate there's FAT16 (FAT) and FAT32. FAT32 lets you allocate over 2GB to the file system, if you have a card <2GB it's probably going to give you slightly more room using FAT16 as the metadata will only have 16 bit's per block, but if it's >2GB you need to use FAT32.
