Anyone out there know about the self-cancelling indicators on the 1200GS.

I can't find anything written down about them, but general concensus is that you have to travel 220 yards in 10 seconds (I work out this as travelling at least 45 miles an hour).

Mine seem to have a mind of their own, sometime they cancel (when you don't want them to), other times they stay on for ages. Haven't worked it out yet....

Any top tips out there ????

Indicators

Mine seem to self cancel after a while, I have never worked out how long. If I put them back on immediately they then seem to stay on for ever. I have nearly been caught out by this a couple of times.

I haven't worked out how they're programmed yet...

At 60+ they seem to stay on for around 10 seconds.
At 30- they seem to stay on continuously.

I haven't tried to understand what they do inbetween.

There's a section in the owners manual about the self cancelling indicators (or at least there is for my 06 bike - in the 'indicators' section ;) ). Something along the lines of when the bike is moving, they self cancel after 15 sec or 200 yards whichever is first (IIRC).
Have a read!

Can't find anything in my 05 handbook.

It whatever takes the longest :thumb You would'nt want to be sitting there waiting to turn right when your indicator stops :nenau

Shep

I've found what makes mine tick (heh). If I'm overtaking a line of traffic and want them to stay on, they go off. If I'm coming off a motorway they go off before I've reached the junction. If I'm in town and turning left or right, they never self cancel and stay on until I switch them off.

So TBH I'd rather lose the fancy logic and have direct control over them. If I want them to self cancel, they don't, and if I don't, they do. They're no better than non-self-cancelling indicators, in fact they're worse cos you still have to fañny around switching them on and off manually but for opposite reasons.

If anyone from BMW is listening: Please remember KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

These are the single most irritating item on my bike!!! There has got to be a way of removing it or reprograming it :nenau

Like you say, indicate to come off on the Motorway and they cancel prior to leaving!!

It drives me nuts!!!

I spend more time looking at my indicators than whats occuring ahead!

Come on you techies....find a way to sort it..please :bow

On Motorways I am now in the habit of making the indicators at the first exit marker (300 metres), then pressing the indicator again at the final marker to be sure they stay on rather than self-cancel. BMW need to increase the delay slightly so they stay on until you enter the off-slip lane, maybe another 2 flashes would do it.

Still Confused...............

This all came about because I was on an Observed run with the AIM, and my indicators self-cancelled half way around a motorway roundabout.

At present, I re-apply the indicators after counting to ten ! Annoying, but it works.

I still don't have a definitive answer how they work.

The technician at Motorrad said the self cancelling delay is programmed in and can't be changed - even he didn't know what it is supposed to do

Not very satisfactory I'm afraid....

Thanks for all your comments Guys :bow
