Subject says it all really.

I want to get the silencer off my 1150GS but when we tried to remove it when replacing the final drive it wouldn't budge.

We managed without removing it so didn't pursue the problem.

Now I do need it off.

Hints and tips please

Mine was like that too, the rubber mallet method is indeed the way to go!

OK chaps, thanks for the rubber mallet advice - camping type mallet I assume?

But where do I wallop it? The junction of the two parts?

Cheers Richard

carrying on from the 'tools' thread -

Don't just use any old rubber mallet - all it'll do is bounce off.

Try and find a plastic coated lead-shot filled mallet. A dead-blow mallet. Mine is a Snap-On and probably cost far too much, but its now 15 yrs old and still going strong.

Facom and Thor also do them - usually Red or Black Nylon

similar to this:

These are just the best things in the world for 'non-marking percussion adjustment' :)

I bet steptoe has a few.......

Understand! Now to find one!

also bend it back and forth to "crack" the join, if you know what i mean.

soak with dubbyadee 40, bit of sharp heat on the 'outside' tube then whack it with aforementioned 'technical adjuster'??

Sorted!!!

:D

What a surprise!

Decided to take the bull by the horns so to speak after doing the FI balancing - nice warm silencer!

Liberal application of liquid spanner (Plus Gas) and, with the help of my welding gauntlets and a certain amount of swearing resulted in separation. Hooray!

Don't know what my final drive spanner man was doing that stopped him removing it!

Anyway, all rust removed from previously solid clamp and it's all back together now.

Was it OK to use copper slip when re-assembling?

The whole idea of taking it apart was to check that I could before splashing cash on the Wudo elbow and possibly a Y piece.

Oh and a brief test run without the silencer was surprisingly tame - just a slightly louder and deeper exhaust note than before.

When I ran a car with out even it's exhaust manifold it produced very satisfying blue flame but no sound at all - at least not until my hearing had returned ;-)

Cheers Richard
