Service costs - ABS 1150 Adv

How much are you lot paying for servicing?

My 05 plate 1150 Adv (ABS model) needs it's 6K and annual service. Park Lane quoted me 470 quid!!! I know the ABS adds to the service costs, but I nearly dropped a bollock when they told me how much it'd cost!

Is that the going rate or does that sound like a lot to you guys?

It's a lot! Around £200 should be the going rate.

Mine was around £360 a year ago for a vanilla service, no problems etc. Absolute pissrip of a price - welcome to BMW world - someone has to pay for all that flat screen TV and coffee in the "customer lounge" etc.

The "ABS" thing is a red herring - they charge you £90 to change the fluid - takes about 1/2 an hour if you do it yourself. You just need to bleed twice extra at the ABS pump, compared with the non-servo system. It actually bleeds itself when you pull the leaver - the servo does the work for you!

He did a superb job on my 1150, loaned me a bike and even reminded me on Saturday at Vines that my front pads were shagged. And if I'd bought 'em off him they'd have been half the price of BMW's...

Definitely a rip-off. I paid less than £200 for my 6K, at 7 months old. I've just checked with my dealer and there's nothing they really need to do at the so-called annual service as the fluid changes are now at 24 months.

I'm interested in this 'bleeding' procedure as I normally do my own maintenance, but paid out to have the dealer do the brakes as I thought they were not particularly user friendly. My GS is a December 2002 model ABS with the BMW calipers and servo assistance. Could you explain the procedure in more detail as I would like to try it myself. Is any special equipment needed? Nup - tis easy. Bleed the master down at the servo unit under the tank - top up as you go at the master, then the servo down from the calipers, topping up the servo unit as you go - do it in that order. There are 2 mini tanks on the servo unit - front's for the fronts, rear for the rears (it's clear when you look) - go easy on the plastic caps, especially when tightening - only need to be stop splash tight.

Just squeeze the lever and the pump does the work! Other than that, it's as per.
