Hi Guys, My first post be gentle with me.

Some advice for those in the know please. I have just bought my first 1200GS 06 plate. I was last serviced only 3500 miles ago but that was in 2011. It has had very little use in the last few years, Full BMW service history up to now. so my question is what service would you give it? Nothing until 6K or annual or any other suggestion.

Next question, I have always service bike myself but never had a bike with ECU and fuel injection myself. I'm happy with oil changes and valve adjustment but inclined to let BMW do brake fluid if it needs some sort of ECU setting.

Thoughts please.

thanks Rick

It needs a full service IMO - all fluids (engine, gearbox, final drive, brake and clutch) and everything else that goes with it. There is a reason for having annual services irrespective of mileage (if you don't cover 6k miles a year) - it does mechanical things no good to sit not being used.

If it was me (and I was in a similar position a couple of months ago - I bought an '07 that had done only 1,000 miles in 2 and a half years but not been serviced) I would take the bike to an independent specialist for the service to give yourself peace of mind that all is good. Unless you have lots of spare money, of course, in which case you should take it to a main dealer :D

I'd agree with sproggy that all the fluids, particularly the brake fluid if you have ABS, should be changed. I'd also suggest looking very closely at the brake pads and callipers as lack of use is the prime cause of things sticking and seizing. It's all conventional stuff apart from brake bleeding with ABS but there's plenty of advice online if you don't fancy doing it yourself.

+1 all the fluids are really easy to do, but I'd personally let BMW replace (and bleed) the brake fluid, but only because I've never done that.

I have done the fluids on plenty of bikes with ABS and linked brakes just dont let it run dry but this one may have the servo if so some advice may be needed

Thanks for the input, I was thinking on those lines. I think I will do the fluids and let BMW do the ABS fluid change. Just waiting for my manual to arrive.

I think if you can do valve adjustment a bit of research and some advice you will be fine changing the brake fluid if its non servo its dead easy the same as any other bike just dont let the reservoir run empty on a ABS bike as it can be a pain to get the air out
