Is it a big job to change the shaft seal?
My dealer is quoting £650 + VAT is this correct, anyone had one done?
Any help appretiated.
Thanks

Probably worthwhile searching for Mitch Motorrad / RGM in Manchester / Preston as independant alternatives to BM main dealer prices. Might be worth asking a coupe of main dealers as well eg Williams / Jefferies / Rainbow / Southport Superbikes as I'm guessing the quote is from Crewe?

Guess you've asked about it being a warranty or goodwill repair already?

I dont know anything about the specific shaft / seal affected on a BMW, but the lip type seals are very common and a leak is often down to wear on the shaft (ie underhardened) rather than a faulty seal. Odd though it may seem, its the shaft that wears before the rubber of the seal.

Currently got exactly this problem with my boat.

Suggest you check with your dealer what the price includes in the way of replacement parts cos if the price is all labour its one h*ll of a long job.

Ok, I admit i've not done it on a 1200, but I have changed this seal on an 1100.

You talking about the seal on the back of the gear-box?

Once you have got everything off: wheel, shaft, swing-arm, shock (tie the rear caliper out the way so you don't have to re-assemble and bleed), you should be able to prise out the old seal and tap a new one in. If you can't get in to prise the seal it's usually possible to wind a self tapping screw into the seal and then pull on that with some grips to extract it. If the 1200 has lock-nuts on the swing-arm pivot pins (like the 1100/1150) then you need some heat to soften the loctite as they are a sod to shift otherwise.

Should do it in a day if all goes well.

Hi Garry,

I had mine replaced by Williams BMW Trafford who got BMW to do it as a goodwill gesture a couple of weeks ago, BMW covered the whole cost despite my bike being a Nov '04 model (well out of warranty) that I purchased privately. It is in excellent condition though, with less than 10k miles and has a full BMWSH.

Had they not agreed to cover the cost, they'd quoted me £450 to do the work, but I was planning to do it myself. Looks like a reasonably straightforward job but very time consuming as there's so much dismantling of the bike required.

Cheers, Ross.

Problem solved. PX the bike for 08 model and the dealer will sort as part of the deal.
Thanks for your help.

As above done at Williams 16000 OOW too.

My problem was not FSH as the 12 months services are not complete.

no reason why service history should matter - the rear seal is not a service item
