Shell Optimax vs normal stuff

The last couple of fills I've put Shell optimax in. The beastie seems to like it, hard to say that the extra octane gives extra boost but MPG has definately improved - seem to get >10 miles more per tank. However seeing as Ewan&Charly seemed to be able to put any old junk in their tanks on their trip I wonder if this is really pearls before swine. Anyone science minded person here really know if it makes any difference?

Short version: better petrol = better performance everywhere, but going round the world I suspect you'll take what you can get.

ISTR the 12GS technical marketing material mentioning a sensor that detects combustion and dynamically changes the timing to make best use of the petrol quality available; hence why the 12GS does not need a magical "dongle" to survive poor petrol, unlike the 1150Adv?

This question has been bounced around by VFR owners for some time now, and the general consensus seems to be that yes the bike does seem to run better and give marginal mpg increases. Is this all in the mind maybe but I use it in all my bikes and feel that they benefit. My Old fella uses it in his Turbo Forrester and swears by it.

Is it a fact? Well I suppose only a controlled test followed by engine strip down would tell?
If you think it works I suppose that's all that matters

I tried it in my Triumph Sprint ST and didn't notice any difference at all. Apart from the price difference between normal unleaded and Optimax.

That'd be an anti-knock sensor. As 1100s and 1150s don't have them, provided that the fuel is good enough not to cause knock at all, it really doesn't make any difference after that.

How does that work out against the extra purchase price ?
