time to hassle Clifton for local knowledge!!
Twizzle I know you were considering riding around Shenandoah Park or maybe down the Blue Ridge, have you decided for sure where you want to go? There are a lot of nice roads and things to see but since you're right there and haven't done it, I would suggest the BRP. It's a nice motorcycle ride. If you do decide to ride down the BRP you could do something like this your first two days;
Willville motorcycle campground would make a nice stopping point for the evening. It’s about Mile Marker 177 (177 miles from north end). Take old Rt 58 west about 1 mile. I wouldn’t imagine you’ll be carrying camping gear but Will has a little sleeping cabin he rents for about $40 per night. Will keeps the place up nicely. On weekdays there’s usually a handful of other bikers, maybe 10-15 on weekends, depending on weather. It’s a pleasant place to spend the evening sitting on the porch or around the campfire chatting with fellow motorcyclists. http://www.willvillebikecamp.com/ It would be best to call Will and reserve it because it gets booked up ahead of time.
Starting from there you could ride the remaining 290 miles to the end of the Parkway (which ends at mm 470) the following day. It’ll take you by Mt Mitchell North Carolina (MM 350) which at 6,600’ is the highest point in the eastern US. Asheville is a large town with many amenities just beyond Mt Mitchell. From Asheville to the end of the Pwy is probably the best part as far as riding. Mt Pisgah MM 410 is a State Park with nice rooms and a good restaurant.
The Parkway ends just before Smokey Mountain National Park. The park itself will be congested this time of the year. The neighboring nearby towns are Cherokee North Carolina and Gatlinburg Tennessee. My advice is to avoid them like the plague, unless you like honky tonk tourist traps. I would turn around and go back to Mt Pisgah, or Asheville for the evening.
If you are interested in riding somewhere different let me know. Heading south from DC on I-81 there are 4 primary east-west roads which cross over the hills. 50, 33, 250, and 39. A pleasant ride is to zig zag over into WV on 50, back into western VA on 33, into WV on 250, and back on 39. If you are interested in doing this I can suggest various small connector roads between them.
