Shenandoah.......

..Booking Eagle Rider Road King tomorrow... 4 days in banjo country!! :D

LOL. Probably so if you ride a couple days SW.

Result!! And I only have to pay for the Harley....:thumb

time to hassle Clifton for local knowledge!!

Twizzle I know you were considering riding around Shenandoah Park or maybe down the Blue Ridge, have you decided for sure where you want to go? There are a lot of nice roads and things to see but since you're right there and haven't done it, I would suggest the BRP. It's a nice motorcycle ride. If you do decide to ride down the BRP you could do something like this your first two days;

Willville motorcycle campground would make a nice stopping point for the evening. It’s about Mile Marker 177 (177 miles from north end). Take old Rt 58 west about 1 mile. I wouldn’t imagine you’ll be carrying camping gear but Will has a little sleeping cabin he rents for about $40 per night. Will keeps the place up nicely. On weekdays there’s usually a handful of other bikers, maybe 10-15 on weekends, depending on weather. It’s a pleasant place to spend the evening sitting on the porch or around the campfire chatting with fellow motorcyclists. http://www.willvillebikecamp.com/ It would be best to call Will and reserve it because it gets booked up ahead of time.
Starting from there you could ride the remaining 290 miles to the end of the Parkway (which ends at mm 470) the following day. It’ll take you by Mt Mitchell North Carolina (MM 350) which at 6,600’ is the highest point in the eastern US. Asheville is a large town with many amenities just beyond Mt Mitchell. From Asheville to the end of the Pwy is probably the best part as far as riding. Mt Pisgah MM 410 is a State Park with nice rooms and a good restaurant.
The Parkway ends just before Smokey Mountain National Park. The park itself will be congested this time of the year. The neighboring nearby towns are Cherokee North Carolina and Gatlinburg Tennessee. My advice is to avoid them like the plague, unless you like honky tonk tourist traps. I would turn around and go back to Mt Pisgah, or Asheville for the evening.

If you are interested in riding somewhere different let me know. Heading south from DC on I-81 there are 4 primary east-west roads which cross over the hills. 50, 33, 250, and 39. A pleasant ride is to zig zag over into WV on 50, back into western VA on 33, into WV on 250, and back on 39. If you are interested in doing this I can suggest various small connector roads between them.

This is great Clifton thank you.... I’m not due out till the end of July, so will be starting to look seriously at the best options over the next few weeks... I’ll check out your routes on Google Maps and be back with more questions...

Thanks again.. :thumb

Road king booked.... so, it's full steam ahead.....

I've only have four precious days, so now its time to do some planning to get the most from the trip...current plan is to rock up at 0900 on the 26th July, pick up the RK hit IS 66 and head west....err, that's it... At some point I'll have to turn around and head back as I'm sure BA won't wait for me..:D

I've not been stateside since 2008 and I'm missing my fix.. ( I used to work for a US company and was back and forth a fair bit...) ..

Hopefully the food is still extreme and the television still shit...!! ( it's the adverts, every two minutes with no warning.....) oh, and I'm there over a Sunday, so time for 0800- GOD.... Only 49 dollar to secure YOUR place in heaven..:D

That’s a good road to get away from the DC sprawl. I guess with four days you can’t get too far without needing to turn around but you’ll have fun riding the RK. And even the worst day on a motorcycle is better than work! Actually western VA has a lot of pleasant little roads.
Keep us posted on your plans. And if there’s anything I can help with let me know.

Have fun Twizzle. Actually we may pass as I'll be on my way east to the Fairfax VA area early Saturday to visit my new grandson :-). The wife is already there and I'm stuck with the dog so "Sophie" and I will be in the truck, with my John Deere hat! (They gave me one after I bought a new rider for the wife)
It's pretty warm here in WV and it's typically at least 5 degrees warmer near DC so it'll be hot and humid walking through the monuments. The Smithsonian with AC may be nice right now. If wanting to ride much I would ride directly to the BRP where it's much cooler. Unlike most roads which cross the mountain ridges this road follows them staying high enough to beat the heat.
