I plan to move back to Oz after spending 14 years in the UK.

I bought a HP2 a month back and want to bring it with me and will do everthing I can to make it happen.

I have been through all the relevant threads on here and looked at all the legal requirements for bringing in a complete bike.

Although the bike is 3 years old I will only have owned it for 6 months come the time to leave. So a personal import is not an option.

I have decided the only way will be to break it down to bits ( I have found a BMW mechanic who thinks it can be done in 3 hours).

Can anyone think of any pitfalls??

This HP2 you bought from your mate around the corner; can't he provide a receipt that demonstrates you've owned the bike for the minimum required time to enable a personal import ?

I like your idea, however the import form not only needs to see reciept it will also need to show that it has been used for 12 months.

The best way of proving that is the UK logbog previously the V5 which shows the date of the new owner.

I have considered leaving it here for a few more months but they want photocopies of my passport when I apply for the import permit so that will show I left the UK in Oct, a break in the 12 months.

Hey by the way, my brother's name is Phil..........that's not you Phil masquerading as a 'Tosser' is it ???

TK

This mate of yours who lives in, er, Greece or somewhere out of the UK which doesn't require a logbook, didn't his receipt show the number of kms as markedly less than on the bike now ? Wasn't the bike garaged and used solely there ? :augie

There has to be a way around this "challenge" !

Phil (no relation, but a tosser none the less)

sk1p, it may be worth checking the price of a similar bike in OZ, to my knowlege GS's are cheaper in OZ than the UK, HP2's probably the same, my be worth considering selling the bike in the UK then buying another in OZ.

save the hassle and cost of shipping, not to mention the 6-7weeks on a ship.

just a thought...

Not a bad thought, although HP2's are pretty thin on the ground in Oz. Having said that, a mate took many months to sell his, because potential owners are similarly thin on the ground ...

You could peruse these sites to get a feel for the prices of used bikes :
www.bikepoint.com.au or
www.bikesales.com.au or
www.tradingpost.com.au

Trust me nothing second hand, or new in that case, is cheaper in Oz.
Its a cornered market so prices are more than competative.
You can look on BMW Motorad sites in Oz as they have their prices on the website for both new and used bikes

If you live in WA like I do, you have one BMW Motorrad dealer in this 1,000,000 square kilometre state. Some choice huh ??

You pay what they ask, or you don't get.

With the strength of the $AU against the green back I've got a few bits from the states way cheaper than you can get them locally (WA or eastern states).

Also, with the way the economy is going in the states folks seem glad of your custom.

The only issue seems to be extended delivery times, but as someone told me recently WA actually stands for Wait Awhile ... :thumb2

The one that took me by surprise when I got across here was seeing Aussie wine (Rosemont / Wolf Blass / etc) being sold for more in the local Wollies than it sells for in my local supermarket in NZ.

As for second hand bikes, a G/S with 170k k's has just come on the market locally ... OK it's pretty well fettled mechanically, but not too pretty cosmetically ... $6,500 I kid you not.
