Shoei Hornet Noise level compared to Multitec

Hi,

My trusty Shoei Multitec is coming to the end of its life now and so I need to get a new lid. I quite fancy a Hornet DS (Have a Shoei head and not an Arai otherwise would have looked at TourX).

I know people say the DS is noisy because of the peak but the multitec isn't the quietest.

Has anyone used both lids in anger and is there a noticeable difference in noise levels?

As a side note I ride daily (commutes 75+ miles per day) and wear ear-plugs.

Shoei

I have a hornet and a shoei raid2. The hornet is noisy would'nt wear it without earplugs, it is also definitely heavier than the raid but i guess maybe lighter than the multi. The visor does catch the wind, not terribly so but it's more buffeting than a road lid, and it does cause an annoying whine in some conditions. Up side is the great range of view from the wider face port, it's a lot cooler for the summer, the helmet covers further down the face than a road helmet. I find the pinlock does'nt cover enough of the visor so when you tilt your head down to block out glare with the visor the edge of the pinlock sits precisely in your field of vision and the difference in clarity between the visor and the pinlock area is quite noticeable. I think the hornet is a good summer lid all in but if i were going for a weeks tour i would take the raid2. Oh and the visor is a pain in the a*$e to change as well when you're used to just popping one off and a new one on with shoei's normal system. Personally the next lid i go for will be road biased with a drop down sun visor much more versatile.

I went from a Multitec to a Tour X3. Can't say I noticed a big difference really! The TourX is lighter - sure.

Tucked down behind a nice big GSA screen maybe protects me whatever I'm wearing. There is some buffeting but generally only on motorways. If I was doing a lot of motorway and touring work I'd probably chose something else but for general riding around I don't think it makes a lot of odds.

What I do find really useful on the TourX is the shade from the sun on my face by the peak. That is well worth having IMHO.

I own a hornet and agree with the (selected) quotes above although I have been know to ride without earplugs - just for the engine and wind noise! The helmet fits an image and my head so I do use it as my runabout and off-road lid (note to self - must do more off-road . ).

Just another thought - the interior design of the hornet makes it far more comfortable than my other present and past helmets for bike-to-bike comms earphones and speaker.

Helmets used: Arai Corsair - old but still in winter use, Schuberth S1 - hurt my neck and the sun visor was rubbish, Roof Boxer - my preferred hot weather helmet and Shoei XR1000 - very comfy but worn out.
