I have three cameras bought over a period of time. As such they have varying capabilities and I will be taking all three on a forthcoming trip.

I have:

  • Contour Roam 2 on my helmet
  • GoPro Hero 2 on a suction mount that I move around
  • GoPro Hero 4 on the front of the bike

The first two can shoot at 1080 full HD but only at 30 fps. The GoPro Hero 4 is quite happy to do 60fps at 1080 which is ideally what I want to shoot in.

When it comes to editing am I going to compromise the quality of the movie by mixing footage or would I be better dropping the Hero 4 to 30fps?

The other option that I am trying to avoid in buying new cameras that shoot at 60fps.

Anything with a higher frame rate than around 30, is really only used when editing the footage for slow motion viewing.
So shooting at 60p will allow you to have nice half speed slow motion when viewed at 30p.
I shoot mostly at 24fps or 30fps which is the standard for normal viewing. So I suggest that you set everything to 30p, normal viewing quality will be the same as 60p but you will be able to record for much longer as the files will be smaller. If you are shooting just for slow motion, then by all means shoot at 60p or higher.

That makes sense. I'd rather sacrifice frame rate than having to drop a camera to 720p to achieve it.
