My 04 1150 GS has a short electrical shut down if it didn't fire on the initial turn & you keep the starter going.
There is a very short cut in the action & the clock goes back to 0:00 as if the battery was disconnected.
It always done it since I had it (5 years), I doubled the battery leads suspecting a bad battery connection but it still does it.
I just seen another 1150 that does it so probably it's not a one off, is there any relay or other component that causing it & can be replaced.

Sounds to me like battery is not holding a full charge, how old is the battery if you have had this problem four five years on same battery?

It did it with the old one & this one is about a year old.

I have the same issue with my 2005 GSA, it was cured by a new battery 3 years ago and now same problem, I am putting that down to a failing battery.

What battery do you use?

Three possibilities come to mind:

--The battery is not getting fully charged when you ride. After you leave the bike overnight, what is the voltage?

--The starter motor draw is high. This can happen if a magnet breaks loose or if the planetary gear cover, inside the motor, comes off and falls into the armature (happens on some starters).

--Your battery is defective. Get it load-tested to check.

Thanks, it's the BMW jell, about a year old, never checked voltage in the morning, will give it a load test.
If it is the planetary gear cover (not sure what it is) how long would the starter survive with bits floating in it.

It's a flat round disk inside the motor which is a cover for the gears. It can sit there a long time and the starter will still function but with intermittent problems.
