Off the wall ...On the case
Just received a 2720 under warranty from Garmin having sent in my 2610 with delaminated top layer of screen. When I rang them they weren't v optimistic about a warranty repair (over 2 years old) and I had to give credit card details.
However the delivery note said "known warranty issue" so presumably no charge:thumb2
Question is ,as there's no manual with it, does this represent an improvement on the 2610? what can it do, I do with it that I couldn't with the 2610?
Thanks in anticipation of your collected wisdom!
Richard

If the 2720 is like the 2620 then if you only use it on the bike they may have done you no favour. Look up "hard drive"

But, you could always ebay the 2720 and get another 2610 :)

The Garmin website may have the manual to download, have you tried googling 2720 manual?

Use it on two bikes and the car. I'd downloaded 2730 manual which seems to be the closest Garmin could get to it but I was hoping for some indication of whether people rated it or not.

2720 is solid state, no hard drive. Memory is not user upgradeable like the 2610 but it has around 2GB so you'll be fine for now and for the foreseeable future as City Nav Europe NT only takes around 1.4GB ISTR.

Mapping is pre-installed and I assume that you have the latest 2009 version of City Nav NT.
  • The 2720 does proximity alerts which the 2610 doesn't, i.e. audio speed camera alerts
  • It has pseudo 3D view option (I still run 2D track-up on mine though)
  • The limit of custom POIs is practically limitless where the 2610 had a maximum of 500
  • It has a more powerful processor though this maybe somewhat off-set by the greater demands of added functionality
  • It runs the NT mapping rather than non NT (NT is compressed) and while I don't think there's any great advantage support/updates for NT should continue beyond non NT although Garmin see pretty good in this respect. The 2610 and Quest were the last models to use non NT.
  • It uses the same mount as the 2610 so you won't have any problems with slotting into the cradle on your bike
There's probably plenty more I haven't thought of but I would say that the 2720 is a distinct improvement over the 2610.

2720 owners manual is here.

Thanks v much Bumpkin that's just the sort of stuff I was after.
Does that mean I can download a speed camera POI to it? if so (where) can I get one without paying (have still got an old Road Angel but it cost too much to continually update).
Thanks for your help.

TBH the only scamera database worth having IMHO is the PocketGPSWorld one, alas this does cost £16.99 a year though.

To upload this, or any other POIs, to your unit you'll need to use the Garmin POI Loader, get this from here.

You can set-up the 2720 to give audio alerts which tell you the speed and type of alert such as "GATSO 60" rather than just "boing", you can even go as far as recording your own. All a bit of a faff, depends on how far you want to take it really.

How d'ya do that, then? Mine has just gone "boing" for the last three years :nenau

Is there a tutorial somewhere?

Same here, great customer service from Garmin, picked my 2610 up on fleaBay, 2nd hand unit and Garmin still looked after the screen issue,:thumb2

That sounds like a result. Did it come with new 2009 mapping and bean bag mount etc?

New mapping

It came with latest mapping, boxed as new, no bean bag but had all the cables. Don't despair if your units screen delaminates, just give Garmin a quick email and it will be sorted. Think I will go with Garmin next time around too, nice after sales service, even though it is a known issue with the screen.:thumb2
