Should Titanium Rust?

In light of Jez's post #16 I wonder if they failed to maintain the gas shielding until the weld had cooled sufficiently.

Is there any chance that the weld is slightly rough and it's simply dirt and or salt in the surface?

I'm awaiting Vern's response to Jez

Oh.... how about mine

Things like mountain bikes are made with titanium because they want to benefit from the nature of the metal so using the right type and build quality is important.

Things like Titanium end cans are made more for the hype than the technical reasons so the grade of titanium used (it just needs to titanum enough to be called titanium) and build quality is not important.

It's rusting because it's shite:hide

When heat and sometimes electrical current is applied to Titanium, temper colours can be produced on the surface is there anyway these marks are hotspots?

It does look more likely that like shite materials have been used though.

My last post was just a cut and paste from an article I found that confirmed Verns post:) I was only speaking from experience at work in my first post where we use stainless, cobalt-chrome, gold and titanium and the only one we cant weld to the others is titanium (we have a laser welder with pure argon feed to sheild the weld)

That is someone with grubby fingers setting the job up, contaminated gas,or zirc' inclusion but more than likely "just scraping through the grade" Ti.I'll see if I can find a price out for a piece of 100mm dia 18g Ti about 18" long on Monday, and I bet it cost more than you whole exaust did.

Just received the following,

Hi Mike,

I have just had an email from the importers saying:-

We have had this can come into stock there are no marks on the inside edge.
If your customer wishes to proceed with an inspection, we will require the can returned to ourselves.
Please let me know and complete the warranty form.
Best regards

No complaints with Motorworks, but p**sed off that I have to do this in the first place.
