Just done an air filter change and whilst removing the tank panels I've noticed that the bolts are rubbing holes in the petrol tank. Just a little indent where the end of the bolt rubs against the tank (the two top ones).

Think I'll source some shorter bolts.

Could you take a photo as BMW have short screws for the first bolts above the seat. This is also detailed as an amendment to the owners manual.

Short Fasteners

As Kiwi posted, the manual shows where the short Torx screws need to be fitted to avoid your problem - sure you didn't refit them in the wrong places? :mmmm

If it is the first time you have had them off the bike, get back to your dealer asap and play merry hell!

Cheers, Rick.

The short bolts were at the rear, ie screwed into the frame tag. At least that's where I think they were originally, certainly that's where I've replaced them back each time I've had the panels off. Not 100% sure now you mention it

But the bolts are rubbing in two places each side. So will need four short bolts. No real damage yet, but I'd check yours if you've only got two short bolts (one each side).

Short Bolts

Spout,

The manual ( loose page addendum refering just to the side panel fixing ) states that ONE bolt is shorter and must be fitted at the top rear of eack side-panel. Do you have this page? (Section 4 of the Maint. booklet)

My tank shows no sign if rubbing under the fixing bolts - are you sure the marks are not the result of incorrect bolt placement at some time in the past?

Hope this helps!

Cheers. Rick.
