Hi guys, has anyone ever had MOT issues with side stand switch not working? i got fed up with dodgy gear selector switch so locked side stand switch on the up position.

You will not be so happy when you ride away with the side stand down.

Mine is awkward to lift when parked (needs a Suzuki style knob) so no chance in the last few seconds of panic as a left hander looms. :bomb

Funny you mention that; I had some issues with the side stand electrics when I was away on a run last time home (bike failing to recognise stand was not deployed when riding away), so I have temporarily over-riden the cutout fuse. I will need to have a proper look at it when I get home next trip.

As has been said - not much fun on the first left hander if inadvertently left down....

Thanks guys sounds like you are getting a bit to comfy with safety devices, i do have a couple of ancient bikes that do not have this ..Point taken tho and hopefully a temporary measure. struggling to get the torx bolts off the gear selector switch, solid, and i don't want to shear them..will hand over to profs.. can't remember being happy tho......

I really don't like so called safety devices but saying that my (manual) car wont start in gear and automatics have always had switches to prevent that.

The GS side stand (GSA anyway) will not lift easily when parked. I guess the bike is less likely to roll off the stand but leaving it down and riding away would Im sure be nasty. On many bikes, the stand will flick up if the rider has a muppet moment and forgets its down, but BMW went for switches which TBH seem to be reliable. The only realistic solutions is a switch (or two).

i do agree with you, but this starting the bike with the neutral light on is a hinderance unless on the main stand, I'm always looking for solutions tho. having issues with the small t6 bolts that hold the gear selector switch they are very tight and i don't want to shear them.but is on priority list for repair. i don't mind fixing but prefer to ride the fecking thing. btw its alight weight standard gs not as top heavy..

The bike is supposed to start in gear with the clutch lever pulled or in neutral. If it's starting only in neutral you need to check the clutch lever switch is working properly.

Update. have just bought a cracking set of torx ratchet spanners and have removed the dodgy gear selector switch minus skin from knuckles, what a stupid place to put a switch, i can't seen to get a replacement unless an arm and leg.. looking for ideas on quick fix or replacement . Oh re-connected side stand switch felt quite guilty Bendy..sound advice tho..

Thanks, i wish it was, mines 04 with a D shaped spindle probably the worst one to get hands on. i will leave on radiator for few days and perhaps will dry out any moisture and try a re-fit..
