The sidestand on my new R850GS has a bit of play in it meaning that in my opinion the bike leans over rather too much on it. I've had the stand off and there's a bush which can be replaced for a few quid and a new bolt would be a tighter fit through the bush, both of which would reduce the play and leave the stand a few cm closer to the bike allowing a slightly better lean angle.

The other options is to get an extender, I see Nippy Norman does one that slides on the existing foot and looks like it'll add about 20mm to the length, that would also be a suitable length increase, from my trials using pieces of wood to see how much height gives a better angle.

So, question is, if the lean angle a known issue with these bikes and I go for an extender (and potentially have to deal with the stand touching/hitting the cat/pipe/centre-stand) or do I just replace the serviceable parts and see if that improves it sufficiently?

Thanks

My side stand on my 1150 has a bit of play but not cm's worth. Maybe 1cm movement at the foot plate end on mine.

If it were me then I would look at bush etc. Taking it that the current bolt is correctly tightened.

The answer to this seems to be yes, it is an issue. My 1100 (low miles, very little 'slop' on the side stand pivot) leans over a lot. If you replace the bush and bolt, there should be an improvement, but it may not be sufficient.
If the b&b are cheap enough, I would go for it, but don't be surprised if you still need an extender.
I understand that 'Vern' will extend your stand by whatever length you fancy.
Do a search and you'll find a lot of info on this.

Enlarge the foot patter on the side stand and add some thickness in the process too. If you are concerned about the play in it, add a thin washer in there and it will do the job ;)

After replacing the bush and bolt on my 1100 I made a fantastic job of extending the stand and enlarging its footprint.

What I forgot was that all the time I was doing this, the centre stand - holding the bike up - was nicely out of the way and affording me excellent access.

First time I go to ride out of the garage, the centre stand doesn't seem to flip up properly :blast:blast:blast:blast:blast:blast

Sounds like the bike is knackered. Ill tell you what... seeing as I live almost next door I'll pop over and bring it back to mine. I have a space in the garage ready. Speak to you soon! :beerjug:

If the bush is worn (and you know it only costs a few quid), replace it. Sticking a bigger foot on it is just papering over the cracks.

That may be the case but the other factor is that the standard foot is on the small side and will dig in if you park on a soft surface so the ice hockey puck fixes two issues in one go.

Don't forget to make allowances for suspension sag when your bike is loaded up with all the kit and caboodle for an extended camping holiday or you may find that you can't use the side stand with a loaded bike and can't get it back onto the centre stand:D No, I haven't done but know of someone who has!

Waste of time replacing the bush and pivot bolt its the actual bracket that wears, bin there done that, just fit a block/ puck/ whatever to reduce lean. :thumb

Ordered a puck from e-bay for about £3 delivered, so I'll give that a go first as I like the idea of increasing the footprint.

I think I'll probably have to shave a bit off the puck so that it doesn't touch the mid-silencer, but other than that it should be a simple fix.

No need to shave the puck at all.
Mine fits fine with either the CAT or the Y-piece :thumb2

I'm not due back in the UK 'til end of next week, otherwise I'd sort out a pic for you.

Neil

I'm also out of the country until Friday, so a pic would still be appreciated when you get a chance! I hear from SWMBO that the puck has been delivered!

How familiar does that sound :blast

I did exactly the same thing. Sawed and filed a nice big sidestand pad out of 20mm think aluminium. Then realised that it fouled the centre stand and had the bleedin' thing on and off about 5 times while I sorted out clashes with exhaust and centre stand. I wished I'd made it out of something easier to cut

Put the main stand up first.

Aluminium block is the way to go I reckon - had it done in 2004 in Canada.

Still going strong - just had the entire thing powder coated...

...although I replaced the screw and bush (which together cost about £9 IIRC) at the same time.
