the rear brake on my Dakar has started " singing" when applied. still works fine and ,Yes I have plenty of meat left on the pads and everthing looks fine. any suggestions?

yeh

take yer foot off it yer soft bugger. sounds like the pads have dryed out. take them out and run the braking surface over a piece of wet n dry to remove the glaze (best done on a flat surface)then when yo put them back put a thin smeer of coppergrease on the back plate:thumb that the backplate. don't do a flipfly and appy in the wrong place:blast
just be a bit more gentle when yer racing v-rods:augie

What you doing using the brakes!!!!!

Strip em down and clean em (that's what you would've said to me!!!!).

Try riding slower???

Coat them with grease (the non slip stuff, chip fat will do!!)

swop the back on for one off the front, it'll be too big but you can always dremmell it to fit. Don't worry if it's not round because wavey discs are all the rage.

Go to Halfrauds and buy a cable operated bicycle disc and caliper set. Fit using superglue and fishing line.

Hope this helps pops!!!!

1 It sounds as if you may be using it too much, seriously.
2 Is there dust in the drum?
3 Try filing off a tiny bit of the leading edge of the lining

Singing brake

I read something over on the Chain Gang about this, and they suggested that it can be caused by the rear wheel being slightly out of alignment. This can be after you have moved it following a chain adjustment.

Might be worth checking the alignment marks on the swingarm. I know that these can be notoriously innacurate though and some people adjust it with bits of string as markers.

Have a look at the font of all knowledge, the Chain Gang faqs: http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/BrakeQuestionsMiscFAQ.htm

Hope this helps.

Trust the idiots from Turnerteck to come up with real world solutions!! I do use the back brake but not excessively and the "singing" is only heard at low speed. I was interested in the view that it could be wheel alignment and will check that too..... I am personally of the opinion that Syco is right in that it needs a bit of copperslip on the back. I will try that and see what it does.:rob
