I have used skype for a few years now, I use a logitech webcam with built in mike and the laptop speakers, no problems to report.

I use the Linksys CIT handset, and keep it with me when walking around. great use, good sound, but.... if you're at your PC, your PC will not "ring", and more important, will not beep when a message comes in via Skype.

From the Skype panel, select "View" then "Tabs and Panels" then click "Call Phone Tab"
