Ok I'm planning to go to Slovenia on a 2 week tour via southern Germany and Austria, but as I have never been to Slovenia before could really do with some help and suggestions on where to go and what to see.

Does any one know the country and the best roads

Thanks

Simon

Rode thought part of Slovenia last year on way back from Budupest & Croatia. We entered from near Trieste & headed to Ljubljana which is worth a short visit, especially the castle on the hill.

From there we headed north west to Italy via the Julian Alps (Karavankens?) & on in to Italy & the Dolomites. For me, this was the best part of Slovenia of the bits we saw. Pretty unspoilt countryside.

If going via Germany & Austria, you might as well head back via the Dolomites & the Alps as we did. Two weeks is also plenty of time to visit the Croatian coast (we stayed in Porec). Zagreb was nothing write home about though.

For route ideas etc, our Ride Report's here:

I only know the western side of Slovenia. The Triglav National Park near the Austro-Italian border is one of my favourite Alpine areas.

The roads are well surfaced and the scenery is lovely.

Highlight are:
Passo di Predil from Tarviseo in Italy towards Bovec in Slovenia. Vrsic pass from Kranska Gora towards Bovec (this pass was closed last month for resurfacing so hopefully the cobble stoned hairpins will be gone). The road through the Soca valley is great, especially for anybody on a fast sports bike.

There are some more suggestions at http://www.alpineroads.com/slovenia.php plus details of passes in other countries you are visiting

Great place

Went to Slovenia last year. Many of the "main" points are west of Lublijiana and can be managed in a few days. But the scenery and riding is fantastic, so easy to spend longer there! I always think its much like how the Alps used to be... (but I'm too young to remember so I'm just guessing!)

We went to Bled, Lublijana then down to Piran on the South West coast and thoroughly recommend them all. For getting around, get yourself a set of touring maps from the BMF - only £5 and has just the right amount of detail for biking/touring. Fab value for money!!

If you're feeling flush and have got GPS, get "Cro-Guide" (you can find the link on garmin's website) which covers Slovenia, Croatia and a few more countries to boot.

You won't be disappointed!!

PS If you go to Piran, pop into the nightclub.. very good entertainment!! :)

Thanks for all the suggestions

Thanks for all the information, I will start researching the places you mention on the net and planning where to stay and roads to ride.
If any one knows of some good hotels worht staying in that would be great.

L, I already have Cro-guide and it looks like the mapping is fairly comprehensive, hopefully its accurate :D :D

Whilst in Slovenia my travelling partner observed that his GPS tracked his journey about 50m west of his actual location. We were riding in a river at one point :)

Hotels: I stayed in Kompass in Kranskja Gora and in Bled I stayed in the Astoria . Both were fine. The Astoria is used by the adjacent catering college as a finishing school for its graduates. The food is good and the service excellent. Some of the decor is a bit 1980s Eastern Bloc but it is having a major refit soon. If you are booking for 2006 then the work may be completed.
