Am just starting to think about my next trip and seem to be moving towards Slovenia. Not sure why but dont really want or need a reason......so.....

Anyone been?, any tips, advice etc

Am planning on a mid - end of May leave date so is anyone planning a Europe trip around the same time to Austria, Germany, etc and fancy sharing some miles?

Cheers

We did that trip 2 years ago at that time and enjoyed it BUT we thought it was a month too early, very cold over the Alps with a lot of snow, Bled was still white at that time of year, the alpine passes don't really open until June. Plus in Slovenia there is no sand on the beaches (mostly). but as every one will tell GREAT for the bike, and pretty cheap.

I've been to Slovenia twice in recent years. Lovely place and people. The Julian Alps in the Triglav National Park are not the highest but they are amongst the prettiest.

The river valleys south of the NP, running from Bovec to Idrija are great biking roads.

As beacon says, in May you will not be able to take some of the more scenic passes en route. The higher passes in Austria, France, Italy & Switzerland will still be closed. The motorway passes e.g. Brenner & Tauern will be open, but on the chilly side.

I went to N Italy in mid June. On the way out the Petit St Bernard pass was still closed. We were able to go over it on the way home in the last week of June.

If you want to make the journey there & back a scenic part of the trip then delaying your travel by a few weeks will be worthwhile, in my view.

Did Slovenia 2 years ago in mid May and the weather was fine.... no problems with any of the Slovenian passes being closed and people were sunning themselves on the shores of lake Bled. Stayed in Bovec, which was ok but needed a naff shellsuit to really blend in. Even did the Grossglockner on our return journey, so don't be put off by the doom and gloom weather forecasters...as ever, keep it flexible and follow the weather.

Went this year, it was OK but I wont be rushing to go back. Everything was cheap as chips out there and locals very friendly.
IMO I didnt think the roads were particularly good, scenery is OK but no better than other places in the Alps. Stopped off in Dolomites on way down which I will be visiting again.

I'm visiting my sister in Northern Italy in late June/July - does anyone know if there is ferry from Italy to Croatia or Slovenia as I fancied crossing over getting to Slovenia that way?

Spent some time there in 2005, summer trip, no problem with weather or snow in the hills. Crossed from Villach in Austria, (nice place) through Kranjska Gora turned off the main roads through Triglav National Park and Radovna down to Bled. Nice route, some easy non-metalled roads, wonderful scenery and Bled was a lovely place. Rowing out to the church on the island in the lake rather than using the powered trips was warmer than it looked. As you go over to the North East past Mirabor it takes on more of the feel of old Eastern Bloc rural peasant land. Back into Ljubljana, nice city, bars and restaurants etc Bit of a bike meet on Wednesday nights at one of the bridges, (cant remember the name, main touristy one!) plenty of variety in bikes and a chance to meet and talk sh1t with other bikers.
Route down to the Slovenian coast has good roads, though a lot of roadworks interupt the flow. Postojna has the Castle set into the cliff face which is impressive. Get past Koper, the industrial docks area and the coastal area has some interesting spots, no real beaches though apart from the private ones linked to hotels etc. It is easy to get across to Croatia from there where the coast line is much better. Also along the Croatian border there are quite a few abandoned villages with loose surafce roads which are worth visiting.
Found it all very cheap, friendly and overall a great time. Will go back again.
