There's a lot of dark brown sludge around the atomisers at the bottom of the needle valves on my 40mm Bings. All the other jets and passages were clear, there was nothing suspicious in either the float bowls or the in-line fuel filter, the filter was as clean as new.
I stripped the carbs in an attempt to cure persistent rough running between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm. It made no difference unfortunately.
I use Castrol Valvemaster additive for the sake of the valve seats.
So why is this sludge there, where is it from?
