Sorry this has probably been asked many, many times, but I can't find it !

Can you put trail type wheels on a DRZ400SM.

One dealer says I can, another says you definitely can't. :nenau

I thought I'd ask the people who know !

Their right, It can't be done. :augie

Noddy - You started with an S not a SM!

You can covert a SM to trail wheels, BUT! it would not be cost effective unless you can get the parts from a crashed S bike. It is easier to go from S->SM than SM->S.

1. The SM has upside down forks, The S or E has conventional forks with gaitors - You would need to protect the stanchions from getting muck in.

2. The brake rotor is in a different position on the SM than the S, You will need to get either a caliper and bracket made up to fit the S wheels, or get a new brake rotor put on the S wheels that lines up with the caliper

3. You could get trail type tyres for the small excel rims, but they are expensive, and not that good.

4. I think the rear swingarm is different (not confirmed that though).

I looked at doing the conversion myself but decided to sell my SM and get a cheapie S instead. Best thing IMHO.

Oops, looks like I got it the wrong way around then :o sorry Wozzer.

My gold coloured wheels came from a SM.

But I can confirm that the rear swingarm is longer on the SM as I had to modify the SM chain guide to fit the S swingarm to stop the chain taking chunks out of the side of the SM tyre.

Explained in my chain/tyre contact thread.

Thanks for the correction DR.

There a pair of off-road wheels for an SM on eBay now.

Iam thinking, of the front forks from the rmz motocrosser, upside doonies, are 47mm ? like the DRZ400SM, then you could fit the smaller disc.
still better of just getting a s to start with.
anyone know for sure?
cheers.

you can easily, i got s wheels for my sm and i just swap the disc over....and change sprockets to 14/44....takes about 20 minutes and has worked well for some time on mine....had no issues with protecting the stanchions as such.

its no different to any other off roader with usd's.

Any wheels can be made to fit if you have the tools ... ;)

GSXR 400, NSR 125 disc, 1 off rear sprocket and front caliper carrier ...
