Hi all,
I have a smell of petrol from my 1200 GSA when the tank is down to about 2 bars on the gauge, there is no smell full tank, 3/4 tank or half tank.

I noticed it about 6 months ago but did not think anything about it as i thought it was coming from one of my other bikes.
I was out on the bike last week and there was slight whiff when I arrived at work.
and today I went into the garage and it was stinking of petrol.
OK first thing check for leaks - none.
took the bike outside and opened the windows and doors petrol smell gone.
brought the bike in opened the cap and closed it again and no more smell.

I dont use the bike much as ive been busy so I was thinking is the tank pressurising fair enough but why the smell?

The bike is going in to dealer for final inspection before warranty ends next week

OK any ideas folks?

Ta Ian

At the risk of stating the obvious, is the filler cap completely closed and locked down. I had a similar experience on one of my bikes, a BMW but I can't remember which one, and the cause was the filler cap not being firmly clicked into place

Mine needed a new tank as the neck to tank join had become distorted and was causing a smell. At first it was very faint but then got progressively worse.

I am out on the bike this weekend - hopefully as forecast looks crap for Saturday
I think the cap has been locked down OK, again ill try putting some fuel in and see what happens.
Bike is back to dealer 31st may

Cheers All

Well been to the dealer for final check before warranty runs out.
They could not find smell of petrol but they have logged it and if it occurs again it will be ok to take it back.

Corrosion - this old chestnut, while I was washing the bike on the centre stand I noticed the centre stand cross brace was quite rusty!
No other rust anywhere else, they have photographed it and I await news.
Bearing in mind I have only done 2900 miles in 2 years and its been out once on a salty road and not much in the rain since - ACF50 treated from new.
I suggested that I get it powder coated and send them the bill - this would be the best option, at least it would last a lot longer than their feeble attempt at painting parts!
For an expensive top end product its unacceptable.
My old Hondas have looked great after 5 years of all year round riding - go figure!

Squeak from the rear suspension had disappeared when I got there, its now back while moving it around the garage - bit annoying.

Cheers
Ian

Just had my centre stand changed under warranty.

I pointed it out at the final check at 6K and BMW replaced it FOC.

Tried to go down the powder coat route but no joy, if or probably when this one starts rusting I will pay to get it coated.

Hopefully they will agree to change yours.

This tank venting issue seems common amongst BMWs these days. I had it bad with my 2012 K1600GTSE & get it occasionally with my F650GS. With both bikes it was always most noticeable as the fuel level lowered, so it has to be air pressure/heat related. Both bikes have a plastic composite fuel cell/tank. It was still noticeable well after the bikes had cooled down, sometimes days later.

Having checked everything I could ever think of, it just has to be an occasional leak of fumes from the filler cap, which has to seal against a composte plastic surface, rather than a clean alloy casting (like say my current FJR). With my K16, the dealer insisted that, as others have mentioned here, I wasn't latching down the cap firmly enough. If it continued they thought a new cap seal might help, but I moved on due to several other issues before this was sorted. Whilst the fuel fumes smell isn't anything near so pronnounced with the baby GS, some had talked of splits in the tank mouldings, so I am keeping a careful eye on things ftb.
