Hi

Just to pick people's brains here......started my bike today at lunchtime and it was a very rattly start up coupled with a strong stench of oil. i noticed that the air around me was blue and that the exhaust was smoking excessively. smelt like oil to me....didnt make me feel good. she had been on her side stand for 3 hrs, but then again i leave her on the sidestnad most of the time at uni.

it cleared up and stopped smoking. does this type of thing happen when the bike is left on the side stand or are the piston rings worn? she drank 1/2 litre of oil in the past week over the course of 300 miles. i thought that on tuesday night she was vibrating a little more than normal at 60mph. it just didnt feel right to me. add to that she drank 12L of petrol in 80 miles - a rate of 28mpg......that was doing my bike training at 60mph.....i usually get 160 milesbefore having to fill up with panniers on.

im getting the 60k service done next week so hopefully that may go someway to solving this.

has anyone had an 1150gs smoke on start up? the oil level is at the top of the circle on the oil sight glass, but not above the red circular line.

thanks

Smoke at startup after being on the sidestand is not unusual, they all do that sometimes, it does sound like it may have fouled a sparkplug in this case.

Didn't you top up the oil a while ago?

Take the airbox lid off and check that there isn't a lot of oil in there and that the filter isn't soaked in it

At the left rear underside of the air filter housng there is a plug rotate it and see if you get a lot of oil out?

If it was on sidestand and there's a lot of oil up there then it will run in

If the filter is wet then that "MAY" account for HIgh fuel consumption
