My speedo cable has snapped about 3" from the wheel end. The cable is not unduly stressed at that point - Is there anything I should check before I put a new one straight on, I think the mech on the clock isn't jammed (but will check when the new cable turns up).

Bike has done about 45k, still original cable but second set of clocks (Bike was a EU Import).

How accurate is the speedo? Not very? Then now might be the time to swap over the drive at the hub end and get within a few % of it being accurate :)

10% out, easy enough to convert in your mind and accurate enough not to worry about

Speedo cables do snap.
Fit a new one and forget about it. Until the next time it snaps :D

I'ld only consider doing this if the drive itself needed replacing.. the 10% underreading is a good safety net when the cams are about. On my first GS the cable broke in the first year.. about 5,000 miles or so. The one on this bike appears to be the original... its weathered enough.

from memory snapping used to be more of a problem than it is today. change of design/materials maybe?

Pulling the inner out and cleaning/greasing it is in the service schedule, looking at the run and where it curves a few inches up from the bottom is about the tightest bend the cable makes.

40k miles on a speedo cable!! Where is the f'ing BMW Cstmr no... I wanna know why you got the good 'een.

I picked up my 96 bike private sale at 20k miles and within 20 miles cable had snapped. I knew then I had a "proper" GS:D and not some shite. Gearbox rebuild at 45k confirmed this!

Mine is 5MPH in 70 which is good for my ego, good for the anti cop thing and still 5% short of Kawasaki's. We used to ask about the old ZZR11's "You seen 200mph yet then?" Aha, aha...
