Hi all,

I know this has been discussed many times before and I'm sure it will be discussed many more times too!

My 07 GS is a great bike except for the snatchy throttle, worst when trundling through town on part throttle where it hunts. I realise it's a big shaft driven twin and "They're all like that sir" but a mate has a 1200RT which doesn't snatch at all. Same engine but different mapping presumably.

I bought an Accelerator Module and fitted it to mine but it has made absolutely no difference whatsoever.

The only other options seem to be a Booster Plug or a Power Commander 3. The PC3 seems good as there are various maps to try but I just thought I'd see if anyone here has managed to cure the snatchy throttle issue with one first...

Fingers crossed :)

Another option is an Hilltop remap...many have done this including myself on an '08 GSA.

fit a £30 accelerator module, makes a big difference,
can be fitted in 5 mins, had one on my old 05 GS,

Yup :)

TPS, balance carbs and check valve clearances make for as smooth as you can get.......then learn to feather the clutch at slow speeds.

Carbs?????:D I think you mean get the throttle bodies balanced and that will help:thumb

My twin cam has always been smooth on and off the throttle its as good as a set of carbs the best injected bike I have owned on and off the throttle.

I had an 08 gs that was like the op describes and swapped it for a 2k miles tc that didnt . But as the tc transmission loosened up, it became more jerky. What I am getting at is that some of the jerkiness comes from taking up the play/ tolerances in the drive system. Doubt that? Put the bikes on the centre stand in gear and then see how much you can rotate the back wheel backwards and forwards.

Its a while since I last had a bike with a chain but memory says there is less movement on a chain drive bike.

Thanks all :-)

I'm using the standard exhaust and air filter. I tried unplugging the battery for 5' then reconnecting and slowly rotating the throttle fully 3 times (which I found suggested in another thread) - is this the TPS reset?

Throttle cable slack is minimal but I haven't got around to balancing the throttle bodies yet - I'm guessing there must be a guide here somewhere on how to do that and the valve clearances?!

Has anyone fitted a Power Commander 3? If so how did you get on with it?

I have a PC3 on mine and it's a brilliant thing. I had it set up on a dyno to suit my riding style i.e lots of torque and lots of down power and my bike was transformed and at 106,000 miles it's still very smooth and runs sweetly. I personally think it's better than a remap because you can tune the set up to suit your own needs.

If you have time, it would be worth running around to Steptoe in West London who would do your valve clearances and set up ypur throttles. Well worth the time and money with a guy who knows what he is doing:thumb2

My 09 has similar symptoms and its a real pain in town, my previous 05 1200GS was fine as were my previous 2 1150 GS Adventures. My 09 has had an accelerator module fitted, made no difference whatsoever, had a Hilltop remap recently and made pig all difference to its slow speed shenanigans. Checked coil sticks and all seem to be functioning when on centre stand, although they could have degraded over time and may be suffering under load (its never garaged and used 12/12, hence its now a rust bucket). In desperation, its going to have new coil sticks and plugs in a week or so's time. Don't want to sell it as its a good bike apart from that (SE in white with anodised spoked wheels), and the water-cooled machine interests me not a jot (I also have a twenty year old Porsche 911 (993) as my sole four wheeler, the later water cooled versions of those also interest me not a jot).
I'll let you know if there's an improvement post future works.

Thanks HPNer. I feel the same, it's a great bike but is ruined for me at the moment with this issue. I don't understand how the RTs seem to be so much smoother with the same engine but we are where we are!

I also have a 2009 SE which exhibits the same symptoms as yours, but only sometimes! I have read that it shouldn't make a difference, but if I run it on super unleaded ie 97-99RON after about half a tank it seems to be noticeably better. Go back to 95RON and again it becomes a pig. Don't think that all RTs are better, I have ridden dozens of them, and they range from very smooth, to frankly awful, on bikes of the same batch, mileage etc.

My GS does the same as Flippers, its much much better and less snatchy with the higher super unleaded. I'm New to all this and wasn't having fun in slower towns and junctions where it ran a little rough and lumpy, it was like the old days of having a manual choke! Im sticking to the higher octane now.... regardless of what people say about it having knock sensors.....well worth a try if you haven't already

I have an 08 GSA.
Transmission snatch is annoying but it's a shaft so I feather the clutch.
Power Commander 5 solves any carburetion issues but it's a blunt tool. For the same money you could use AF-XIED lambda shifters or a Hilltop remap.
Unlike the PCV these retain the ECUs ability to self adjust as needed.
The standard map will not let you use any power below 2500 revs. Get the mixture right and it's fine below 2000.
Hunting is caused by the OEM map running too lean.
