Hi guys,

Just fitted my autocom 300 onto the bike and everything seems to be spot on at the mo. Having issues with the ear pieces in my Shoei Multitec but can be sorted using a bit of fettling I reckon.

One thing I did think about was that when I'm not using the kit, I just have an open-ended connector near my tank and also one strapped to the side of my helmet. What happens if water gets into the one hanging out near the tank? I'm not an electrical type bloke so I'm just assuming that water mixing with electric causes short-circuiting and the thing to go pop?

Is that right? ... it can't be surely .. I must be wrong otherwise everyone else would have this. How does the the autocom unit handle this?

cheers from an autocom newbie

i've used Autocom gear for years.
never had a problem and i've been out in weather thats got me soaked.

i know what you mean though - you'd expect there to be some problems. :nenau

the only trouble i've had is the mic / sponge cover getting drenched and it gives up and fails. though to be fair this was on either an open face or a Roof Boxer lid.
once dried out - normal service resumes :thumb2

i wouldn't worry - just take sensible precautions - i.e; if a lead is going to dangle - dangle with the open end facing DOWN.

HTH.

been thinking about this too...

Wouldnt mind a water / dust cap for the one that hangs out the tank + for the other two that are stashed under the seat and not being used at the moment...

Is there such a thing as a 7 pin din socket cap???

Or perhaps we could all buy 3 additional 7 pin din plugs and shove them in...

Nate,

i thought about that too.
i would rather have exposed fittings that can dry out than covered ones that can allow moisture/condensation to spread to bits i cant get at and slowly damage.

just my 2 cents based on my experience :nenau

feel free to ignore ;)

I've had autocom on mine for years and no issues with water ingress. I leave it facing down when parked up outside and never had a problem. I also had the helmet end get rather wet at times on the BM off road course last weekend and it worked fine on the way home. An occasional squirt of WD40 wouldn't do any harm.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO dont use WD40 it can cause the sealed plugs to break down causing damaged leads which can also lead onto system problems.

Our plugs are designed to be ran OPEN and do not need any caps, covers or any WD etc.

My rider lead is on a clip on the tank , doesn't face down, is left on the bike permanently , the bike is left outside when I am at work, the bike gets jet washed (with care) regularly.

The open end of the pillion lead is cable tied to a pannier rail, hangs off the side of the bike and consequently it usually gets sprayed with water and shite off the rear wheel, all year round.

The autocom has been on the bike for over 5 yrs ........NO PROBS:thumb

is'nt the unit turned off with the riders lead uplugged? Riders socket lives outside no probs

on a potable system yes, not on a bike powered system as the bikes ignition controls the power side of things

cool - cheers chaps

Thought you could leave these plugs alone as every other bike I've seen does and never heard anyone say anything has happened. Just didn't seem to compute though captain.

Its just I'm a lazy git and couldn't be doing with making the end water tight etc when it rained or I wanted to wash it.

All in all though the fact it handles the wet as it does, is well impressive to me.

Now just to get my iphone working with the zumo and I never have to get off my GS :thumb2

+1 on that. :thumb2

i cant think of a harder test than to wear an open face lid fitted with Autocom mic and train riders for 5 hours straight in the p1ssins of rain!
worked fine for 4 of the 5 hours :D
only when it's absolutely soaked - then it fails.
to fix... just let it dry out and carry on :thumb2

Had a problem recently with water getting into the pillion plug. Caused the unit to squeel at me. Once I realised what the problem was, a quick shake of the offending plug, and everything returned to normal. Not had a problem since. It had got wedged pointing upwards, so I now make a point of checking this before setting off. :blast

push to talk buttons fail when they get wet. you get a permanent transmission
as a result.otherwise bullet proof
