I plan to visit Morocco in Oct and do some off roading, so just how good are the KTM twins as off road tools (for off road tool riders)? My 1200 GS seemed to handle being dropped all the time ok, do KTM 990 Adv do slowish crashes ok? I know it a difficult question to answer but all the road test say how the KTM is based on a proper off road bike: is it really and will it lap up off road in Morocco compared to say an HP2 or 1200 GS or the 700/800 BMW twins? Or should I take a TTR 250 over and stick with a proper off road bike?

It's superb off road.proper suspension and engine characteristics make it miles ahead of any gs off road.mefo super explorer on the back,tkc80 on the front and off ye go....

I agree with you about the suspension, yes in a different league but if your 990 has a snatchy throttle like many do and a G2 throttle cam doesn't calm it down, I'd say it could be a bit of a nightmare for a relative novice offroad but great if you're prepared to ride it fast.

Get a 950adv much, much better:beerjug:

The late 990 (circa 2012) I had didn't suffer from snatchy throttle / low speed surging issues, the fuelling was pretty good...

As far as crash resistance goes, they seem to be OK but not as indestructible as the 11xx.

Some (I'm not sure which model TBH) seem to have wheel rims made of cheese that get dinged easily (but by the same token, can be encouraged back into shape with a soft mallet)
Ive seen them wear through the bodywork that surrounds the tank on a loonger slider down the road, but the tank wasn't punctured.......it just looked expensive IYKWIM

Take spare fork seals....they can go and when they go, they are a PITA to find........we managed to get a set sent across to Zagora from the big bike dealership NOT the KTM one, they were bloody useless) in Casablanca.....I forget the name of them but they're well known and there's a guy there who speaks fair English

We got the seals delivered overnight on one of the big trucks for a very sensible fee :)

(Ps no idea who that old dosser in the pic is :D)

They seem to be a bike that you have to dominate.....The GS is probably more forgiving, but from what I've seen the big KTM needs a firm hand or it will bite back.

They swim better than the GS
(or at least, we didn't have any get waterlogged even though we did try a few times )

Performance wise, a well ridden one will probably ride rings around a GS with a similarly competent rider. (I don't think you'll have any problems Andy, you could tame one)

I'd agree with Tim.....If I was after one, I'd go for a 950 :beerjug:

Now I have more experience of WP forks, I'd just fit neoprene protectors and either make or buy a thin plastic tool to clean any dirt out of the seals if they start leaking as with hindsight they inevitable don't need replacing when they leak in dusty conditions.

Saying that, I've carried spare seals for a KTM on the last two Moroccan trips and two Trans America Trail trips just in case but since using the protectors haven't replace seals in 8 hard years with Husaberg and only once 7 yrs with KTM (there were non fitted the:blast):beerjug:

Thank's :) I found out how tough the 990 is when I had SMIDSY a couple of weeks back. The bike took the impact pretty well and the crash bars saved my right leg getting properly smashed. The bike is at JD Racing in Plymouth awaiting insurance assessment at the moment. Hopefully it can be repaired in the next few weeks and I am hoping I can keep all the old bodywork and crash bars to use in Morocco if the bike isn't written off. Looking at the replies I reckon I should be ok on the KTM if I stick to the easier pistes and it will be perfect for the road sections.

Good to hear you're ok after that Andy!

Cheers Tim, it's always nice to pick yourself up off the road without anything being broken. I spoke to JD Racing this morning and it seems there is a fair bit of damage to the bike including a bent rear subframe. Hopefully it's still not written off. The chief mechanic is on honeymoon until 21st and I am away for another two weeks so it is going to be a rush to sort everything before I head to Morocco the end of Sept. Such is life.

+1 :thumb2

And to just to add, I've ridden with a few 950/990 Advs and it seems they'll pretty much go anywhere an HP2 will go... so that should tell you all you need to know :D
