*title grammar fix - which*

Hi all,

After a recent thread showing a chap having starting problems due to ruined cables, i'm looking to upgrade mine - reasons two fold, to avoid these issues and also to improve starting e.t.c. A mate of mine owns a Speed Triple and he was having starting issues in the cold, when he upgraded the cables to the starter and earth, its starting much easier.

So whats the done thing eh chaps?

Also, if anyone can recommend me which aftermarket belly pan to buy, that'd be much appreciated. Not too happy with the standard one for coverage and looks, would like something to cover the downpipes too and also look a bit meatier.

Cable upgrades....

I purchased normal battery leads from Halfords.

I ran a 24 " long lead from the battery + to the alternator then a 30" from the alternator down to the starter motor then another 24" from starter back to the battery, a sort of ring main affair.

I then ran another 30" from the battery - to the engine block earth point.

My original earth lead was quite corroded and I knew it would let go when I really needed the bike so as the tank was off for other work (See recent thread entitled DEAD?) I treated it to some more weight to carry round.

Maybe a bit OTT but it works.

Twenty quid for the lot, job done.

Roger.

While the petrol tank is off, also remove the alternator drive belt cover. The M5 screws holding the top piece under the alternator go right through the aluminium and the threads can seize solid. Mine just sheared off with almost no spanner (OK its a Torx) effort. I drilled them out to M6. The same screws on my brother's bike were beginning to fail but caught in time.

I also had a mess of corrosion on the engine top. Some twonk must have spilled brake fluid as the whole area was a mess of flaked paint all gone brittle.

You don't need to "upgrade" the cables - They are more than adequate for the current involved. Just clean up all the connections/jointing faces.
