Found these on the web, as I am considering getting some soft luggage for the GS PD, to keep the weight down a bit-
http://www.moto-sportpanniers.com/index.html
They sell the Yukon 11 bags, which, as far as you can tell from the rather dated website and pics, look as if they are well thought out, and fairly tough.
Anybody used them, or even heard of them ?
I would include a pic from their site, but pics are pretty poor really.
Pricing in most cases (pun -geddit ?) includes frames, but for the 100GS PD,(not including frames) around $325 US, plus shipping, seems not too bad.

Open to suggestions for other soft options....:blast

R100Gs

I made a Coupla sets of Canvas Bags , for the Caja Sahel Pannier range.
The Canvas Is Particulary well suited to the R100GS , cos the bag sits
away from the Exhaust end..
It also lends itself well . cos the R100GS rear subframe is not that strong.
In Saying that , The Contents although when in a Tarpaulin Bag remained
dry ,they just arent as good as HArd Panniers , Security ,being one issue
a sorta damp feel to the Bags contents being another.
A chap that has used them Extensively ,also reckons that they need more
attachment points , or a Flat Solid insert to keep they ""right ""

I have one Set if your interested in Canvas bags .

I got em on my F650GS - and they are great!.

I take em off when not touring / doing a trip (don't have any photos with them on) - but usually you can leave the brackets on and they are very un-noticeable on the little GS good protection for the odd dirty spill too :blast. Prolly different on the big GS though - I use Varios on that.

Very robust, light weight and can stuff almost anything in them! Great!

Hi Civil One, thanks for the info, & had a quick look on your website,at your canvas bags, but a bit hard to tell from your picture. I know Ortleib do some soft bags, as Walter is using them on his Sibersky Extreme trip.
The Yukon bags do have a rigid back of 3mm ali, which makes them a bit more rugged.
Agree re security though, and damp clothes too !

You have the Yukon Bags ? Where did you get them from -in the UK ?
Or do you have another make, if so which ones please ?
I had ARD Cases on my 1150, but just feel they may be a bit heavy on the PD. Redcap's boxes are excellent, and strong too, but at the expense of extra weight though. As you say, fine on an 1150, but maybe overkill on PD.

I've got the Ortilieb soft panniers which apart from some jiggery pokery with the velcro and the addition of a cargo strap when closed to ensure no "flapping" there fab and totally waterproof. I have Evo quick release pannier frames to keep them off the exhaust (F650GS). Highly recommended.

I got the Yukons from the USA posted to UK.

Thanks Kahuna ,
And what do you think of them then ? Are they waterproof, and are they easy to use ? Can you get much gear in them, and are they pretty durable ?
They are a bit pricey though, but seem, for soft bags, fairly secure.
How much to get them shipped please ?
many thanks :thumb

http://www.andystrapz.co.uk/

always fancied trying this stuff but don't know exactly what its like.

Had a look on the website, and the Expedition Bags look the D B's. Thanks Bowser. I'l have to look into these further :blast.
Price is good if the quality is as good as they claim. Not the biggest bags, but just have to save on the undies and T shirts.:drool

The Yukons will take as much kit my varios in the expanded position - mainly because of the soft outer sides. They hold shape great - never had wet kit in them (they do come with a rain hood, but I tend to pack everything in plastic bags).

I've dropped the bike on them a couple of times on soft dirt and they just clean straight up - no probs. Obviously security is an issue if you leave the bike any place.

I really like them, and only the security issue would stop me putting them on the 12GS for touring.

They are significantly less wide on the bike than cans too. I suspect they'll take a lot more of a beating off road than the ali cans.

Don't recall the prices I'm afraid as it was almost 3 years ago I bought them.

soft luggage

I had some Aussie 'Gearsack' panniers from Civil, which seem tough and work well on my airhead. Only complaints are water leaks thru zips despite overhang and they could do with more elaborate means to fix to pannier frames, when empty they flap outwards and masquerade as air brakes

Thanks everyone for the replies, and think, on balance that I'm going to get AndyStrapz Expedition Pannierz. They look the business, and, even including shipping, not too expensive. Andy has replied quickly to my queries, which to me , counts for a lot. They/he also does some other desireable bits of luggage, so migh be temmpted by his AA Bagz..so might be selling my Givi topbox !

Hi Roger, I am thinking the same about ordering a set. When are you ordering them? and is there any benefit of doing a joint order? :thumb2

George

Edited to say: I have some Ardcases on the R80 G/S PD which seem to be ok, you can have a look at some point if you wish

Hi George,
ARD cases are great -I had some on my 1150 GS, and Roger lives pretty close to me too. I was wondering about getting some made for the PD, but I think they'll be a bit heavy, and one of the reasons for my selling the 1150 was the weight, so I am pretty much decided on the Expedition Pannierz.
So, don't know if we could either ask for a bit of discount for ordering 2 sets, or if it would help reduce the shipping costs ? However, there would then be the cost of postage in the UK, either to yourself from Cambridge, or vice versa :D.
I was hoping to order in the next day or so, just depends on wether David ( the UK end of AndyStrapz) has any AA Bagz in stock, as I was planning on getting an AA Bag as well as the Expedition Pannierz. (Sadly David has no Pannierz in stock in the UK) The AA bag would be cheaper from David in UK, as lower postage etc.
I'll drop you a PM maybe tomorrow, and we can take it from there if you like ?
I was quoted $80 Australian for shipping Pannierz to UK.
Cheers George,:thumb
