Don’t worry about that small tank....it’s all part of of what that ‘bike is about.

I ran a ‘Sporty’ from 1988 to 1992. I did a lot of miles on that little ‘bike (including Euro trips) and I avoided changing the tank. You just get used to it (or at least I did) The simplest of simple ‘bikes, looking after it is a doddle. A lovely thing just to bimble along on.

Just get ‘into it’......:)

I really liked the fat tyres and the wide bars. They are an added extra :nenau
and the small tank...

but it only has a 70 mile tank range!!!

Thats a stock 48 apart from Hollywood Bars, White Grips and Seat....:thumb2

100 miles ,is about right ,after that you stop for a cup of tea,i loved my sportster, both of them, and as ive said before ,i think the sportster ,is the purest form of harley:thumb

Just had a quick squint at ebay/Autotrader prices in general etc....

I've been away from Harleys for a few years,so maybe it's me, but these things seem bloody expensive....:nenau

They're expensive to buy, but they hold their value better than most. They're expensive to buy useless farkles for as well, and don't even think about trying to make them go faster on the cheap :eek

Basic standard ones are relatively cheap to run, especially if you DIY or use the indies. The less glamorous models are also good VFM as well

making it go fast was never something i had considered but the dealer was trying to sell me a stage 1 tune :nenau

Is it worth doing?
I just thought they where trying to make more money?

Stage 1 is more about noise, add-on goodies and you spending money than about obtaining better performance, whatever that means.

And odds are, your bike will vibrate a bit more and be less enjoyable over longer distances.

As was said, enjoy your bike, see how you get on with it, and if you do, you might be tempted by a Fat Bob, Street Bob or whatever in time.

It was once upon a time as HD put a mahoosive whole in the fuelling to get them through the emission regs in California. Now they're all fuel injected it just means they make a lot of noise, and for some reason Sportsters make a LOT of noise. Fine if you like that kind of thing :nenau

As has been suggested it's only worth spending money if you are keeping it long term as you'll get very little back on what you spend :thumb

Nice looking motorcycle!
The stock airbox is pretty restrictive, if you do nothing else I would suggest replacing it. I'm not up on Sportsters enough to know if the ECM will adjust or if a dealer download would be needed? They claim it is needed.

Niiiiiiiiice:thumb2

I agree, I do like the 48. Have owned both Sportster(Custom) and Dyna(Low Rider) a lot of fun - european trips, rallys, Chapter's the lot. ( traded the Dyna for a GS:thumb last year !)

You must keep an eye on the bottom edge of each mudguard (fender). The paint will laminate and bubble in a few years - despite being kept off the road in the Winter. Don't bother with the loud exhaust, it will drive you mad on a long run as the Sportster has a higher exhaust note than the big V-Twins.

That aside ... Enjoy !
