Ive got a 1200GSA and am unsure if I should connect a battery optomiser. The bikes manual says that if the battery is charged while still connected to the bike there is a possibility of damaging the electronics, unless a BMW charger is used and says always disconnect from the bike before charging. Any advice gratefully received.

Optimate Charging

I have my battery on my R1200GSA perminately hooked up to my optimate on a direct fused socket. It has been connected this way and on my previous GS for the last 4+ years with no problem. If you intend to charge through the canbus socket, you will need the BM one, which the canbus will then "recognise".
Cheers

I have an 07 GSA and put my battery on charge fortnightly over the winter period. I connect it via the crocodile clips on the Optimate whilst the battery is still fitted and connected to the bike.

I have never had any problems whatsoever.

Will a latest generation Optimate (version 4 or whatever it's called) work being plugged into the aux socket and / or being connected direct to the battery via a fused lead or croc clips? Yes.

Will an older generation Optimate (version 3 or earlier, I guess) work via the aux socket? No

Will an older generation Optimate work, connected directly to the battery, via a fused lead or croc clips? Yes.

Will all or any of them fry the battery or the bike's electronics if left charging for 365 days or longer? No.

If unsure about any of the above, buy the BMW charger.

Optimate 4 Dual Program. It communicates with the CANBus so that you simply plug it into the accessory socket and leave it connected. Mine's been maintaining the battery like this for several weeks now.

Absolute doddle to use and can be programmed to charge normally or charge via the canbus though the aux power socket.

No need to remove seat to access the battery or have charger sockets running from the battery to an accessible position on the frame.

Thanks guys, think I'll get myself a new Optimate 4

Make sure you get the one with the canbus adapter cable.

The Optimate 4 can come "with" or "without".

I bought mine from Infinity at the NEC bike show but have seen other very good prices on net.

Pays to shop around, just make sure you get the canbus cable model.
