Advice from the learned ones please. Due to time constraints, bad weather and me taking bits on and off my 1100gs, I did my first longish ride on Saturday. Above 80mph (only reached briefly) it started to get some vibe's from the engine. It's smooth up to that speed, starts and ticks over spot on. Question : Do they all do that ?

My last bike, Yamaha XTZ1200 didn't. I'm aware that the boxer engine is old school so just need reassuring that ' they all do that' sir !

Cheers, Rob

Not tried doing that ! Good idea. It feels like it's just 'what happens when you wind up the boxer engine'. It does just feel like a vibey engine. I don't know another 1100 owner to compare with.

my 1150 doesn't particularly vibrate upto 80 but as you say there is a bit more vibration above, probably due to it being a bit quick for the bike, its comfort zone is best between 40-80, above this it becomes a lot more involved to ride. For reassurance does it vibrate at those particular revs in all gears (80 in top is about 4k?), try it in 5th and 6th to see if there is a difference. Checked tyre pressures etc?

Vibration

Well what is vibration to one person will not be to another but to answer your question from my perspective
I have not noticed vibration at 80 plus and I have owned 3 bikes with the 1100 engine, suggest that you check the fuel balancing see if that makes a difference.

Thanks S 73,
Only have 5 gears on the 1100 . Smooth as a cashmere codpiece up to 80/85 . Just under 4k revs at 80. Thanks for the responce. I'm now happy that it's just my lack of boxer knowledge.

I've set the tappets, oils changed , but my next thing was a throttle balance. I'll do that tonight. Cheers.

my 1150 vibs like a bitch all servicing done and tb set correctly. plus iv had the injectors cleans witch made a big improvement. that why i was asking about the zero zero setings for the throttle bodys due to mine has been messed with

I read about that. The link to the ADV explanation, as to adjusting the zero zero thing, nearly blew my mind.

Have you tried accelerating beyond 80 to see if the vibes fade/disappear. It could just be a combination of various adjustments that are needed (TB, valves, tyres etc). My 1150 has a few vibes at around the same speed but they vanishif i go on though to 90+ in 6th (understood you don't have a 6th). So it's just in a particular rev range.

But note the other suggestions i.e. does it happen in different gears at the same revs or speed?

Don't do it!!!

it's a huge fuck up waiting to happen!

I've found tyres can be a culprit of vibes and speed makes it worse. New Tourances always feel smoother than worn ones. You don't notice it when you've worn them down yourself until you fit new ones.

I'll balance the throttle body's and report what happens (it's going to do it at the weekend now, the wife wants me to do married stuff tonight, and the rest of the week :blagblah !) Oh, and check out the other ideas .

I'm not going to do this zero zero thing. It seems that the consensus of opinion on here is, if it ain't farked, don't mess with it. I'll follow this plan.

They never ask you to do boyfriend/girlfriend stuff that involves emptying the tanks, it's always married stuff which usually involves emptying the dishwasher :D

Non zero zero is a wise choice. Sometimes the internet is a thing of absolute danger and best avoided.

Vibration above 80 mph = warning system fitted by manufacturer to let you know you are breaking the maximum speed limit allowed in the country .....

Just a little update...riding home tonight and thought about this thread so went to 80 and bloody thing nearly shook my teeth out! That didn't happen this morning. Went back to 80 and it was shaking more than Beyoncé. Looked down and the swingarm was bouncing so looks like the shock is out for lunch, anybody got an old working one hanging around anywhere?

It's zero = 250 anyway and not zero! Only do it if you have to and suspect that something is wrong, in my case the lock screw had somehow loosened so the TPS reading was all over the place and the bike was running like sh1t. Easy enough to do and plenty of clear information available online if required.
The vibes could maybe just be a characteristic of the bike so have a ride on someone else's 1100 and see how it feels but don't compare it with a Yamaha 1200
