I have had my 1150GSA a few months now and this is my first problem, after a 200mile run today. When I open the throttle after doing a constant 60-70 Its not picking up cleanly Its surging for a few seconds then it starts picking up properly. When I get home I also noticed that the tickover in now alternating between 1000 – 1200 rpm.

Where do I start looking? :nenau

fuel filter, plugs, plug leads?????

of course i could be talking crap.

Twin spark bike ???

Could very well be the main plug cap coil, which is a common problem .

Simple test to confirm if it is - Do a search, lots of threads.

Yep its a twin spark and I have just done a search. My symptoms match. :(

Is it best to swap them both out working on the theory that if one is on its way out the other one will follow soon after. Or do they fall over randomly?

Randomly.

But they've changed the style/material the caps are made from, so perhaps this may have "cured" the problem :nenau

My right coil went, then 2 weeks later the left.

I blame running the bike hard for a day with the first coil but the second must have died out of sympathy. :nenau

Still, sorted now and under warranty.

I had exactly the same problems, tried everything until 2 days ago when Andrew at BMW at Guildford said ''mmm sounds like a spark coil''. I then checked the site saw the long list of posts then swaped my main coils - left to right, started bike up, symptoms now coming from the right! good enough for me.
Upon closer examination I saw corrosion running along the centre of the coil. (top one was in left pot)

£46.88 plus vat (£55) each to replace BMW part number C12.12.7.680.644

My symptoms were surging, stalling at idle and top end felt like heavy wind resistance against the bike.

Hope this helps!

I replaced both coils today and everthing is back to normal. Thanks every one for your advice.:thumb2

Could have got away with changing one, but as I am poping over to Holland by bike in 3 weeks time. I thought sod it and changed both. I now have 1 good coil for the spares box, I just dont know which one:blast
