Second ride on my new 2017 GS with dynamic ESA. Heard a loud bang, first thoughts something inside engine/gearbox had snapped. Pulled over checked around the bike. Engine running ok gearbox ok but suspension felt like it was sitting slightly lower. Tried raising and lowering ride height it and all seemed to be working ok. However the magic carpet ride I was getting now seems to be harsher, very much like my earlier LC. Anyone have any thoughts on what it could be?
Possibly could have been an object hitting underside of bike but the noise was like something breaking, am convinced damping isn't as good as it was.

Sorry to state the obvious but check your tires for nails, screws etc

The bang could have been a puncture

Would the TPC not have notified this? Sounds like a plug job to me - Dynamic ESA = Ace... but complicated and for the sake of mind, get it looked at by the people who may end up having to repair/replace it.

But the tyre's only flat at the bottom!

But seriously, I suspect he may have noticed a puncture, and certainly one that made a tyre go bang.

Take a look at the springs on the shocks. If a spring broke near one end, the bike could sit a bit lower AND make the spring harder.

tyre could also lift a bolt/bit of something which banged under seat on way round. Look for marks etc, wont necessarily have punctured your tyre

If I ride over bits of mud on the road then the front tyre throws them up on the underside of the bash plate, you can feel the knock through the bike and hear it as well.

The first thing I would check would be the rod that monitors ride height as part of the Dynamic ESA - has this come adrift?

Hi All, Thanks for your replies and advice. Much appreciated, will try some of the suggestions especially the springs and the rod for measuring ride height. Tyre pressures ok but will have a good look for any damage.
It didn't feel like something that had been flicked up by the tyre, it felt like something had snapped.

A diagnostic will not show up a fault on the ESA software side , it never does.

Sounds more like something mechanical has failed ie the rod on the rear shock , that said I was told by BMW technical that if anything fails in the shock or if the software has a problem it stiffens the shock up to its hardest settings as a limp home mode

Took it to the dealers today. Someone in the service department took a quick look checked the rod mentioned by NeilW, they can sometimes come off. Everything appeared to be fine scrolled through raising and lowering. Said they would investigate further when it goes for 600 mile service.
Thanks for all replies and advice.
