South Australia- Adelaide

We are moving out to Adelaide later in the year from Exeter in the UK. I had a GS 1150 before selling it 18 months ago when our son was born....bought a bigger car. Currently back on the road with a 1997 Triumph Sprint but the move will hopefully free up some cash for another GS.

Whats the motorcycling like out there in SA. From the couple of trips we have made out there so far most of the roads seem poker straight and a bit boring. Spoilt for choice down here in Devon/Uk/France.

I'm not an offroader, or havent been to date. Is there much opportunity to get off the tarmac for some light off roading to start with

Is there much of a bike scene, rallys, shows etc. Is there a local GS group in Adelaide.

Just come back from my first Dragon Rally this weekend and suddenly realised how much bike "stuff" there is going on in the UK that I have taken for granted. Only a few more months to cram in as much as possible before we leave but it would be good to know that Australia has stuff going for it as well.

Adelaide has some of the best roads in Australia

We have the Adelaide hills that are a biking nirvana

Quite a few GS riders in a Adelaide and a few of us get together about once a month for rideouts

Yes there are straight roads here, but in the Adelaide Hills and surrounding areas you will be pushed to find any. If you choose not to use the dirt tracks you would also be missing whole areas of the best places and becoming another tourist. We did a dirt run the other week and in nearly 300kms say no more than half a dozen vehicles none of which got in the way.

There is loads for the lone biker to do good 2 up touring, organised (loosely) ride outs both on and off road plus the numb bum runs the last to Victoria, Alps, Snowey River and NSW, this year to Queensland and next to Tasmania.

Straight roads are few and far between

What, another southern Git? Maybe not, I don't really know what one is other than maybe Walton, but he is now a converted "Strawyn" and his/their past history doesn't count anymore. I'm a ustabe seppo but I'm better now.

Anyway, that is the Tequila talking. We have the Numbum run coming up in three weeks time; I have my GS-A on the trip and there are a mad mix of other bikes. It is all bitumen but not a straight line in the 5000km journey.

If you're up to this kind of riding, onct in Adelaide all you have to do is show up at dildo central (otherwise known as the Mobil filling station at the bottom of the hill/freeway/Princes Highway/look it up on the map mate) at 9am Sunday, any Sunday. I work a two and two roster (i.e. two weeks away and two weeks free) so I'll be there half the time.

Trust us, we'll take care of you.

No seriously great weather, great roads, as much biking as you could ever want, and if you are into the racing trackdays etc then have a look at how many aussies fill the the grids of MotoGP and SBK and that will give you an idea of how healthy that scene is

If you love bikes and riding you will love SA - I have been off bikes for a year or so after breaking my leg (at a trackday ) and getting back on made me realise what was am missing

Mike, that tag line might be innocuous (sheesh, what a word) but it isn't misleading; you trusted us - you took your 1200GS on a track day where you had too much fun and broke your leg. We then took care to make bad jokes about the blow out in back side of your leathers at the medical center before sending you on your way in the ambulance and then toted all the bits of your GS to your house (well, not all the bits - we kept some mementos).

I'm off to Brisbane tomorrow; two GS-A's, a Trumpy and a Yamaha loaded in the Landrover and trailer. Quite a responsibility; at current market values I reckon I'll be hauling $55k worth of motor bikes approx. 2300kms.
